Well, while there is always the odd case, for the purpose of this article, we’ll assume that he or she is and we’ll treat them that way.

Competition is fierce, on eBay, on the net, in life, what can you do to set your self apart? First and foremost, you MUST offer a quality product and be willing to stand behind it. eBay runs on feedback and it is far better to satisfy a distraught customer than for negative feedback to be left. Positive feedback is paramount to your success on ebay.

Next is customer service. Are you treating your eBay account as a hobby or a business? If you’re serious about making money, then focus on providing excellent customer service. Give your customer MORE than expected, fill that order... BEFORE it is due. It is always more difficult to sell to a customer the first time. Based on that, once some one buys from you, your goal is KEEPING them as your customer (hopefully long term).

The moment the auction completes, your customer service should begin with your first... “Thank you for your purchase” email. Tell them right off when they can expect to receive their purchase. This way, not only are you removing doubt (they’ve bought something without having it in their hands), you’re also showing you care about them as a customer. Next, do everything you can to fill their order as promised. If there is a delay, let them know about it.

Your “Thank you” email should list the auction they won, PLUS exactly what they bought.

“Dear Winner”

Congratulations on your recent win of item #4567890, a set of three baseball cards in mint condition. Your winning price was $12.95 and the shipping is $4.00 As promised in our auction details, your cards will be sent via Priority Mail on the same (or next) business day. We’d like to thank you for participating in our auction and hope you’ll enjoy your win.

All the best, ebayauctionsecrets.

By doing this, you’re double checking that all is correct, giving your customer a heads up on what they won (that customer may have been participating in multiple auctions), reminding them of the winning price and providing a record of the transaction.

I’m a fan of “immediate payment”, but if you allow checks or money orders to be sent, let them know there will be (and how long) a delay until their payment arrives and clears. If you do accept checks and/or money order be VERY clear on the following.

Where the payment should be sent, giving the exact mailing address.

A REMINDER to include the auction number and description of the product when mailing their payment.

“Dear Winner”

Congratulations on your recent win of item #4567890, a set of three baseball cards in mint condition. In our case it’s “feedback.... feedback... feedback...”

Let your customer know that positive feedback will be left quickly for them and that you’d appreciate them doing the same.
