## How often do you use your phone? Does the battery keep dying from wifi use? New Passive Wi-Fi can save your battery life by using 10,000 times less power. 

### This means you can download longer and not worry about the battery life going down, that is if you have the plan to cover it.

But it still needs more development before being a commercial product. A [team at the University of Washington](http://passivewifi.cs.washington.edu/files/passive_wifi.pdf) is working on getting this out to the public.

The new tech is called Passive Wi-Fi, because it remains inactive unless required to transmit. The current speeds it can achieve are a mere 11 Mbps, or about 1.1 MB/s. This is not at all feasible for consumers, since most of us have internet and home router setups with faster connections than that. It has a long way to go to catch up to Li-Fi, with 224 Gbps capable speeds, 100x faster than current Wi-Fi.

Even though the speed is slow right now, they could technically role it out because it can already be detected by current Wi-Fi frequencies on any existing device. This new technology is capable of working with such low energy because one of the components, the digital baseband, is much more efficient, while analog radio frequencies still use over a hundred milliwatts.

The team at Washington U are decoupling the digital baseband and analog from the Wi-Fi RF receiver and leaving only the digital baseband as a passive receiver that uses much less power. A Wi-Fi signal generated using an array of sensors which are absorbed and reflected by a digital Passive Wi-Fi device. This device then sends the data to your standard router with a corresponding device and use only 15 to 60 microwatts of power, instead of the 100 or more milliwatts.

Now that this passive receptive and reflective technology is here, not only does our battery life get a relief, but the [Internet of Things](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_of_things) gets a boost as it's looking much more feasible. Putting wireless transmitters in many devices across your home or in a community takes up significant electrical use as it adds up, even if they don't operate on a battery pack like your phone.

With the tech developing, Passive Wi-Fi could end up being tiny and fit into many locations for monitoring. You could even have cups thats sends signals when they are filled up automatically by a robot.
