Despite the risks associated with abortion such as bleeding, infections, damage of vital organs, death,it is no longer news that a lot of people still opt for abortion. World health organisation(WHO) reported that 25.5 million unsafe abortions are performed anually globally. The risk highly associated with abortion that is mostly overlooked is the RH Factor: [Image source](https://goo.gl/images/GdHRtg) The Rh factor is a protein that can be present on the surface of the red blood cells. Those who have RH factor are Rh positive and those who do not have are Rh negative. How does a person get the Rh factor? [Image source](https://goo.gl/images/eXVNTy) If the mother is Rh Negative and the father is Rh positive, the baby will either be Rh positive or negative,if both parents are positive, the baby will be positive and if both parents are negative, the baby will be Rh negative Can Rh factor cause problems after Unsafe Abortions? Yes,If the Rh factor of the fetus is positive and that of the mother is negative. After Abortion, the RH-negative mother's blood comes in contact with the blood of the fetus that is Rh positive, this leads to Rh incompactibility! [Image source](https://goo.gl/images/wTboi3) Rh incompactibility causes the Rh negative mother to make antibodies against the Rh factor and the woman becomes Rh sensitized. The problem with becoming Rh sensitized as a result of previous abortion is that when the woman becomes pregnant again with an Rh positive fetus, the Rh antibodies destroys the red blood cells faster than the body can replace and this leads to HEMOLYTIC ANAEMIA of the pregnancy. This causes the fetus not to get enough oxygen which leads to fatal illness or eventual loss of the foetus. This explains why women that have unsafe abortions always experience subsequent miscarriages! Can Rh sensitization be prevented after abortion? Yes, the patient should be tested to know if she is Rh negative or Rh positive. If she is Rh negative, she should be given a shot of RH IMMUNOGLOBIN (Rhlg) after abortion. This shot prevents the production of Rh Antibodies, this prevents fatal hemolytic anaemia in a later pregnancy! But if you insist on getting an abortion; 1)Ensure that you know your Rh factor and that of the fetus 2)If you are Rh negative, ensure you are given the Rh immunoglobulin after an abortion 3)Avoid unsafe abortions (home remedies) and get a professional!
