If there's one thing that never ceases to amaze me, it's trekking dogs. A person who goes trekking and gets to amazing places is fine, but a dog who goes trekking and gets to an amazing place is another level. In my stay in <strong>Ushuaia</strong> I did a lot of trekking, but where I always found trekking dogs was in a place called Valle de Andorra. This place is a neighbourhood located at the foot of the mountains that lead to the famous <strong>Vinciguerra Glacier</strong>, where apparently there is a group of friendly dogs that every day accompany tourists on their walks 😃.  

<blockquote>Si hay algo que nunca termina de sorprenderme, son los perros que hacen trekking. Una persona que hace trekking y llega a lugares increíbles está bien, pero un perro que hace trekking y llega a un lugar increíble es otro nivel. En mi estadía en <strong>Ushuaia</strong> hice un montón de caminatas, pero en donde siempre encontré perros caminantes fue en llamado Valle de Andorra. Este lugar se trata de un barrio situado al pie de las montañas que conducen al famoso <strong>Glaciar Vinciguerra</strong>, en donde aparentemente vive un grupo de perros amigos que todos los días acompañan a los turistas en sus paseos 😃.

Arriving in Ushuaia in October had the advantage that it was no longer as cold as in the middle of winter, but the weather was still cold enough to find snow on the mountain tops. In this city in Tierra del Fuego, Argentina, there are plenty of outdoor activities to do, both on your own and with specialised guides. While there are some mountains of high difficulty, the trail leading to the Vinciguerra Glacier is of medium difficulty and many people, like me, go on their own 😃.

En esta ciudad de Tierra del Fuego, Argentina, hay un montón de actividades para hacer al aire libre, tanto por tu cuenta como con guías especializados. Si bien hay algunas montañas de dificultad alta, la senda que conduce al Glaciar Vinciguerra es de dificultad media y mucha gente, como yo, va por su cuenta 😃.

After arriving in the Andorra Valley in the morning with the intention of visiting the <a href="https://peakd.com/hive-163772/@lauramica/argentina-trekking-to-laguna-encantada-in-ushuaia-a-four-kilometre-walk-to-see-this-natural-mirror-trekking-a-la-laguna-encant">Enchanted Lagoon</a>, it was barely 2 PM and I still had many hours of daylight ahead of me. To make the most of the day, I retraced my steps and took the fork in the main path to the left, which led to the glacier. Going from one lagoon to the other took me about two and a half hours in addition to the two hours I had already walked before, the most difficult part being the last one, where the final ascent was completely snowed in. Once at the top, the Témpanos lagoon at the foot of the glacier was frozen solid, so much so that you could walk on top of it 😃.

Para seguir aprovechando el día, volví sobre mis pasos y retomé la bifurcación del camino principal hacia la izquierda, por donde se podía acceder hasta el glaciar. Ir de una laguna a la otra me tomó unas dos horas y media más además de las dos horas que ya había caminado antes, siendo la parte más difícil la última, en donde la subida final estaba completamente nevada. Una vez arriba, la Laguna de los Témpanos al pie del glaciar estaba congelada en su totalidad, tanto que podías caminar por encima 😃.

Once there, I found other tourists having a picnic and three dogs wandering around, perhaps hoping for a bit of food. From the neighborhood to this glacier, at that moment still covered in snow for the time of year, there are 7 kilometers crossing forests and rivers, and all those dogs were very comfortable there. They all had collars with their name and owner's phone number, with the inscription "<em>I'm going home alone, I live in Andorra</em>." I found this very funny, since people must have thought these dogs were lost many times 😅.

<blockquote>Una vez ahí, me encontré con otros turistas haciendo picnic y tres perros merodeando alrededor de todos, esperando un poco de comida quizás. Desde el barrio hasta este glaciar, en ese momento aún cubierto de nieve por la época del año, hay 7 kilómetros atravesando bosques y ríos, y todos esos perros estaban ahí muy cómodos. Todos ellos tenían una collar con su nombre y número de teléfono del dueño, con la inscripción de "v<em>uelvo solo a casa, vivo en Andorra</em>". Esto me pareció muy gracioso, ya que seguramente hayan sido muchas las veces que la gente habrá pensado que estos perros estaban perdidos 😅.

But the most incredible thing about all this was <a href="https://peakd.com/hive-196708/@lauramica/hive-pets-storytime-the-rescuer-of-our-first-mountain-accident-no-serious-injuries-in-this-story-storytime-la-rescatista-de">meeting the same dog I had seen on my first visit to this glacier</a> in December 2023. More than 10 months had passed, and again I found the same dog in the same place as before. On the first occasion, this dog had acted as our guide after a mountain accident, and now he was back, but more relaxed. I suppose these dogs must spend all day on the mountain, with the first ones up and the last ones down. Their daily routine must be like this, so they know the path by heart 😃.

Más de 10 meses habían pasado, y nuevamente me encontré con el mismo perro en el mismo lugar que antes. En la primera oportunidad, este perro nos había hecho de guía después de haber tenido un accidente de montaña, y ahora estaba nuevamente ahí, pero más relajado. Supongo que estos perros deben pasar todo el día en la montaña, con los primeros que suben y se van con los últimos que bajan. Su rutina diaria debe ser esa, por lo que conocen el camino de memoria 😃.

Currently, I'm still working at a hostel in Ushuaia, and every time someone tells me they're going to the Vinciguerra Glacier, I ask them if they've seen the group of three dogs strolling in the lagoon. Most of the time, they tell me yes, that they're there, and with their energy, they visit everyone, begging for a bit of bread or whatever. They're probably almost part of the landscape now and must be very used to this daily stroll 😃.

<blockquote>Actualmente, sigo trabajando en un hostel de Ushuaia y cada vez que alguien me cuenta que va al Glaciar Vinciguerra, le pregunto si ha visto al grupo de tres perros paseando en la laguna. La mayoría de las veces me dicen que sí, que ellos estan y que con su energía visitan a todos pidiendo un poco de pan o lo que sea. Seguramente ellos ya son casi parte del paisaje y deben estar muy acostumbrados a este paseo diario 😃.

As expected, our canine friends accompanied us throughout the descent, as a couple of tourists and I were the last to leave the mountain that day. It was incredible how they walked ahead, as if showing us the way, but also waited for us so they wouldn't stray too far. The trek to the Vinciguerra Glacier is 14 kilometers in total, and these dogs covered them like nothing had happened. I was happy to have this good company, and to know that almost a year later, <strong>the glacier dog still offers its personalized accompaniment services ❤️.</strong>


<blockquote>Como no podía ser de otra forma, nuestros amigos perrunos nos acompañaron durante toda la bajada, ya que una pareja de turistas y yo fuimos los últimos en irnos de la montaña ese día. Era increíble como ellos caminaban adelante como indicándonos el camino, pero también nos esperaban para no separarse tanto. Son 14 los kilómetros que tiene en total el trekking hasta el Glaciar Vinciguerra, y estos perros los recorrían como si nada. Me alegré por tener esta buena compañía, y por saber que casi un año después, <strong>el perro del glaciar sigue ofreciendo sus servicios de acompañamiento personalizado ❤️.</strong>
