Macros often seem like a daunting tool to most users, especially when they come expressed in lines of code or in an Autohotkey script. Some people even think you need a special keyboard for them. In fact, even these terms themselves are probably scary and foreign to most readers, and that's OK - nobody has ever stopped to teach you much about what a macro is or what it can do. Let's take a quick look. Macros allow you to "save" any sequence of actions on your computer - and when I say "any", I really mean "any". There are a variety of code languages/formats devoted solely to "scripting", or the careful capturing of sequences of computer commands. One of these is used by the venerable AutoHotKey, which you will see referred to sometimes as AHK. Enthusiastic computer users used to write entire scripts devoted to taking and repeating actions with their computers.

*This is what they looked like. This opens Google.com, Notepad, and Calculator in sequence.*
The good news is you don't need to know about any of this. I just tell you so you know what it was like before we had an easy working macro recording program like JitBit Macro Recorder. Jitbit has a fairly minimalistic interface, and it still outputs lines of code that look fairly scary. However, you need't worry, as you don't have to know how any of that works if you don't want to.

The core of the program is the ability to record any sequence of commands (mouse movements, clicks, or keyboard strokes) with a single click. It also records the precise delays between each action, as expressed in milliseconds, which you can then edit to "finesse" the timing exactly how you want it. You are then able to set a custom hotkey for any recorded macro, or set a macro to repeat any number of times (including until you stop it.)

*If only Homer Simpson had access to Jitbit.*
Having the output to "code" paired with the easy-to-record interface is actually a huge step up to the kind of software I was using to attempt to achieve similar results in the 1990s and 2000s, such as "EZMacros". That program had a similar ability to record macros with a button press, but once you recorded it, you couldn't edit it - you could only re-record. It was like the cassette deck of macro software. This is a very large issue, and I spent hours re-recording macros to try and optimize them. Jitbit bypasses all that hassle by giving you access to the output code. Was a pause too long? See exactly how long it was in milliseconds and edit the value directly to get the perfect time loop. Need to compensate for your system getting slower over time on a tight macro? Add 10% to the time delays in your macro in a few moments, rather than have to record an entirely new macro. You'll have to determine your own use cases for this software, but I assure you they are many. Want to be able to open a sequence of programs with one hotkey? Record it. Do you ever do any data entry or repetitive activities at work? It can definitely save you some time. Frequent gamer? You'll find a way to use it. Once you do find a way to automate some annoying task you used to do manually, such as organizing your music files, you'll fell very clever. I'm using it on another system to save myself a lot of time as I write this very article! Time saved is like money won - twice as sweet.
