Learning languages is an enriching journey that can be explored in many ways. Society has naturally discovered ways to employ tech into communication and language sharing. One of the biggest tools for culture and language exchange is subtitled media. Subtitles have come a long way over the years and companies like Netflix pay various translators to subtitle media to enrich their catalogue of content across regions. Streaming services that offer subtitled media in various languages are more than welcome. Yet, it’s very to see any service that will let you use multiple subtitles simultaneously.  

There are various reasons as to why multi-subtitle viewing is useful: 
Learning languages – Watching foreign media with your own native subtitles along with the foreign language’s script can help enrich reading abilities. 

Watching with company – I watch movies with friends and family, not everybody speaks or reads the same language. Everybody can understand better with their own subtitles on screen. 

Comparing translation work – Not every translation is the same and some users care about accuracy or general tone. Being able to compare on the fly is useful too. 

Regardless of reason, there stands a great need for viewing multiple subtitles when streaming media. This is where Chrome extension Dualsub comes in. It provides customisable subtitle rendering on various video streaming websites if available and even allows custom subtitles to be used locally. I have tested this for a number of months and found it to be one of most useful tools, allowing me quickly setup subtitle styles, pick available languages when streaming and it even has notation support for those learning languages. 

Dualsub is a fantastic extension that vastly improves a user’s viewing experience and I hope to find similar tools on android devices.
