Bitcoin mining requires hardware to adapt to an increasing difficulty that is part of the design of its blockchain, which has forced mining equipment manufacturers to use increasingly specialized chips. In that race, the mining equipment of the Chinese company Bitmain have given that manufacturer a position of dominance.

The Antminer S9 is the top device of the Bitmain range, which achieves a performance of 14 TH/s. In order to estimate the production cost of one of these equipment, a user identified as ICCSuperman dismantled a Bitmain S9 and published details about the components used and their cost.

After completely dismantling it, the technician estimated the production cost of the Antminer S9, according to the market price of the components, at 5,000 yuan or $ 790, when the average sale price in China is almost triple: 14,000 yuan or $ 2,213 . That is, Bitmain shares with its distribution channels a 180% profit on each S9 equipment sold.

The main card of the Antminer S9 is manufactured by Xilinx and has an ARM processor and 189 ASIC chips -designed to measure for the cryptographic tasks required in Bitcoin mining- with 16 nanometer technology.

These chips exhibit the best electrical performance on the market, which is measured in terms of the joules dissipated by each gigahash and allow the S9 a global throughput of 0.1 joules per gigahash. A joule is the energy equivalent to one watt per second.

Compared to the Antminer S9, the S7 model has a third capacity in hashrate -4.73TH/s- while another competitor, the Avalon6 has a performance of 3.5 TH/s.

Independent evaluators affirm that the maximum rate of hashrate of the Antminer S9 is of 12.93 TH/s, measured in a team of a specific batch and that that maximum performance varies in the different batches, reason why it is necessary to pay attention to the specifications of the mining equipment before acquiring it.

According to a report by Bernstein Research, Bitmain generated between 3 and 4 billion dollars in operating profits in 2017, similar to those of Nvidia, manufacturer of graphics cards (GPU), also used for mining although designed specifically for graphic processing. Nvidia is 24 years old, while Bitmain started operations four years ago.
