UN Commission on War Crimes in Syria regretted that all hopes that reborn at the end of last year on the end of the violence have dissipated

The United Nations commission that documents the war crimes in Syria today lamented that Syria's killing "continues without any shame, decency or responsibility, two days after the seventh anniversary of the beginning of the conflict.

The president of this commission, the Brazilian jurist Paulo Sérgio Pinheiro, presented today to the UN Human Rights Council his most recent report on the violations of fundamental rights perpetrated in Syria since July last year.

He described the situation in the eastern Ghouta region, a rebel bastion near Damascus that has been heavily targeted by Syrian government forces, but recalled that "none of these atrocities is new."

Paulo Sérgio Pinheiro recalled that this was his 23rd presentation of a report to the UN, and he regretted that all the hopes that rebounded at the end of last year on the end of the violence have dissipated with the resurgence of the conflict.

He feared that even the authority of the UN Security Council would not be respected, recalling the breach of the ceasefire just ten days ago to allow safe humanitarian access to eastern Ghouta.

"Hundreds of sick and injured are getting worse while waiting for a medical evacuation. Some of those on the list of serious evacuation cases have died," said Pinheiro.

The commission also referred to the situation in Afrine, a northwestern city of Syria controlled by Syrian Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG), against which the Turkish army launched an offensive on January 20.

In that locality there are currently 320,000 people, including 125,000 internally displaced persons.

Over the province of Idleb, the only one still under the control of rebel groups and where two million people live, Pinheiro condemned the attack on vital infrastructure for the survival of civilians, including hospitals.

Following the intervention of Paulo Sérgio Pinheiro, Syrian ambassador to the UN Hussam Edin Aala rejected the Commission's allegations and accused the Human Rights Council of promoting "a campaign to tarnish the image of the Syrian Government."
