Located in the eastern suburbs of Sydney with distant views of the harbor, this irregularly shaped and narrow site with a steep slope and lots of rocks posed a significant challenge to the architect. The goal was to create a practical and modern family home that captures the panoramic views of the harbor and offers a warm and relaxed atmosphere with lots of light and outdoor spaces. The project was conceived as a group of two pavilions arranged around a central courtyard where spaces can circulate freely from the inside to the outside, allowing the two pavilions to access the light. The house is located as close as possible to the western limit, away from the neighboring property for solar gain and a more panoramic view. The narrow entrance to the site has been widened by cutting existing sandstone boulders to introduce a generous staircase nestled along the rock face. The wide, cantilevered concrete steps follow the shape of the rock and lead to the front door. The ground floor hosts a mix of formal and informal pieces on different levels and a large covered outdoor terrace by the pool. The first floor hosts the parents' bedroom enjoying the north aspect and views, with the children's rooms located on the top floor. The existing tennis pavilion has been transformed into a guest house with a new level added to house a gym. To accentuate the meaning of seamless spaces, the architectural material palette consists of dark metal, wood, stone and concrete.
