Built on a site classified as Quebec's cultural heritage, the concept of integration and implantation of the new reception pavilion of the Seigneurie-des-Aulnaies is carried by the characteristic elements of the landscape: the river, the bridges, the woodland and the stone buildings. A Land art approach, using the framework and materials of nature, was favored in order to discretize the intervention and highlight the components of heritage interest and landscape. Thus, the pavilion-landscape takes advantage of the elevation of the site to blend in and minimize its visual impact in the environment in addition to allowing universal accessibility. The stone is the first source of inspiration for the project. It is found on the site in different forms: retaining wall for embankments, stacked at the edge of the river or shaped for the facing of the mill. This natural and raw material materializes here as a wall of gabions. The green roof evokes the idea of lifting one of the strata of the site and accentuates the notion of landscape architecture to the point where it blurs references to a building. The spaces are organized longitudinally under this roof. Entrance gate of the Seigneurie, the new pavilion allows the reception and control of access to the site while offering visitors a glimpse of the discovery trail. The first volume of wood and stone shelters the services while the second, glazed, opens on the landscape and frame in real time the common mill and the activity which takes place there. The interstice between the two volumes offers the view of the landscape, river side. On the street side, the wall of gabions accompanies the pedestrian and leads to the entrance marked by a bay window and a thin roof attached to the building. The latter defines a protected plateau for animation activities or contemplation. This protective element is oriented to guide the visitor towards the wooden footbridge that leads to the site of the manor. The project, realized with a very limited budget, illustrates an approach of contemporary integration in sensitive environment aiming at the enhancement of a historical and landscape architectural heritage. Extremely sensitive to the richness of the surrounding natural environment, the building tends to minimize the ecological and visual impact of the new structure. In addition to the challenge of integration was the social acceptability of the project which was successfully met thanks to the complicity of a client open to new ideas and especially passionate about the Seigneurie des Aulnaies.
