Noviembre casi había terminado, era hora de empezar con los borradores de la Carta al Niño Jesús. La luna brillaba intensamente iluminando mi habitación con elegancia y distinción. En la quietud del silencio, escribía la carta en la mesita donde siempre hacía los deberes para el colegio. Mientras pensaba en ello, mi corazón latía con emoción y gran ilusión, sin embargo, me asaltaban las preguntas: "¿Será que estoy haciendo algo mal? ¿Será que no le gusta mi carta? ¿Será que no le gusta lo que escribo?" Buscaba respuestas a mis dudas. Era mi cuarto intento, solicitando un presente que no llegaba. El borrador expresaba algo más o menos así:

>*Querido Niño Jesús:*

>*Hola, soy ML. y escribo tu carta. Debes estar muy ocupado, preparando juguetes para todos nosotros, los niños.*
>*Primero mi reporte, he sido buena. Para ser honesta, no tan buena, más o menos. Es mejor decir que he mejorado, hago menos travesuras. Excepto una pequeña, que fue cortarle el cabello a mi hermana. Fue solo un poquito. No te preocupes,  volverá a crecer pronto.*
>*Niño Jesús, muchas gracias por los regalos que me traes año a año, son muy bonitos, pero.... Tener una muñeca "bebé querido" me haría muy feliz. Es una bebé con un cuerpo blandito y tiene un chupón en la boca. Cuando se lo quitas, llora.  No te preocupes por la ropa. La tía Conche tiene retazos de tela y aprenderé a hacerle ropa. Lo que estaría bien sería un cochecito. Así podría sacarla por las tardes y no se aburriría.*
>*Como eres tú quien trae los regalos a todos los niños, la muñeca que te pido es como la que le trajiste a mi amiga Elena, para que te acuerdes.
Prometo portarme mejor el año que viene. Lo haré.

Escribir la Carta al Niño Jesús siempre fue muy importante para mí, un gran acontecimiento. Incluso iba con papá a entregarla a la oficina postal. El deseado y ansiado muñeco del " bebé querido" nunca llegó.

Mamá era una estratega nata, manejaba muy bien los imprevistos, con sus armas de combate: el amor y la ternura. Era extremadamente cuidadosa con los detalles. Cuando veía mi decepción por no recibir el regalo deseado, intervenía inmediatamente para equilibrar diciendo "Piensa ML, el número de niños en el mundo es mayor este año y todos merecen su regalo. Tal vez el Niño Jesús ya estaba escaso de regalos cuando pasó por aquí. Considera, que hay niños que son prioritarios y merecen una atención especial, sobre todo los niños tristes y los que han perdido a sus papás".

Y continuaba, reforzando los valores: "Debemos ser agradecidos y humildes con lo que recibimos". Me penetraba con la mirada, me acariciaba con su amplia sonrisa y abría de par en par sus generosos brazos. Emocionada, corría a recibir el reconfortante y cálido abrazo, adornado con muchos besos y caricias. Luego todo se olvidaba. Por supuesto, el olvido duraba hasta noviembre, cuando regresaban los deseos y los anhelos, al escribir la siguiente Carta al Niño Jesús.

Con el paso de los años y tras descubrir la dulce mentira, por imprudencia de una prima, fui asimilando y obteniendo respuestas. Estoy agradecida, nunca me faltó lo que necesitaba.  Pero en aquellos tiempos, los presupuestos exigían estar muy ajustados, había prioridades que suplir y era evidente que mi petición representaba un costoso manjar, que no tenía cabida para su adquisición.

November was almost over, it was time to start the drafts of the Letter to the Baby Jesus. The moon was shining brightly and illuminating my room with elegance and distinction. In the stillness of silence, I wrote the letter on the little table where I always did my homework for school. As I thought about it, my heart was beating with excitement and great illusion, however, I was assailed by the questions: "Could it be that I am doing something wrong? Could it be that he doesn't like my letter? Could it be that he doesn't like my writing?" I searched for answers to my doubts. This was my fourth attempt, requesting a present that didn't arrive. The draft expressed something more or less like this:

>*Dear Baby Jesus:*

>*Hello, this is ML. I am writing your letter. You must be very busy, preparing toys for all of us children.*
>*First my report, I've been good. To be honest, not so good, more or less. It's better to say I've gotten better, I do less mischief. Except for one small one, which was cutting my sister's hair. It was just a little bit. Don't worry, it will grow back soon.*
>*Baby Jesus, thank you so much for the gifts you bring me year after year, they are very nice, but... Having a "dear baby" doll would make me very happy. She is a baby with a squishy body and has a pacifier in her mouth. When you take it away, she cries.  Don't worry about clothes. Aunt Conche has scraps of fabric and I'll learn how to make her clothes. What would be nice would be a stroller. Then I could take her out in the evenings and she wouldn't get bored.*
>*As you are the one who brings gifts to all the children, the doll I ask you for is like the one you brought to my friend Elena, so that you will remember.
I promise to behave better next year. I will.

Writing the Letter to the Baby Jesus was always very important to me, a big event. I even went with Dad to deliver it to the post office. The desired and longed-for "dear baby" doll never arrived.

Mom was a born strategist, she handled unforeseen events very well, with her combat weapons: love and tenderness. She was extremely careful with details. When she saw my disappointment at not receiving the desired gift, she would immediately intervene to balance by saying "Think ML, the number of children in the world is greater this year and they all deserve their gift. Maybe Baby Jesus was already short of gifts when he came by. Consider, hat there are children who are a priority and deserve special attention, especially sad children and those who have lost their parents."

And she continued, reinforcing the values: "We must be grateful and humble with what we receive” She penetrated me with her gaze, caressed me with her wide smile, and opened her generous arms. Excited, I would run to receive the comforting and warm embrace, adorned with many kisses and caresses. Then all was forgotten. Of course, the forgetfulness lasted until November, when the wishes and longings returned, as she wrote the following Letter to the Baby Jesus.

As the years went by and after discovering the sweet lie, due to the imprudence of a cousin, I was assimilating and getting answers. I am grateful, I never lacked what I needed.  But in those times, budgets demanded to be very tight, there were priorities to supply and it was evident that my request represented an expensive delicacy, which had no room for its acquisition.
