Dear Hive friends, in my previous post, I showed you a small tour of Tapachula, Chiapas, Mexico.

Today, I want to share more about this vibrant city, especially about the well-known Colonia Centro, considered the heart of Tapachula.

Additionally, I’d like to talk to you about the culture, origins, and history of this city, as I’ve been researching more about the place where I live.

Tapachula de Córdova y Ordóñez, known as the Pearl of Soconusco, is the second most important city in the state of Chiapas. It is located in the Soconusco region, on the border with Guatemala. According to some Mexicans I’ve spoken to, this area was once part of Guatemala in the past.
Thanks to its proximity to Central America and the Pacific port, Tapachula is considered the commercial capital of Chiapas.

I can confirm this claim, as the Centro is a hub of commercial activity. All kinds of businesses can be found there: from stalls selling fresh and prepared food to clothing stores, footwear, and various goods.

![](https://images.ecency.com/DQmNf5km79teGuLviYeisrBNiPsRgQ2ppHwJGqfqFsBHo1X/img_8426.jpg)

The local cuisine is a delight, with traditional dishes like quesadillas, tacos, sopes, and meat tamales, among others, offered on every corner.

Another fascinating aspect of Tapachula is its proximity to the Tacaná volcano, located between Guatemala and Mexico.
From my workplace, I can admire this imposing volcano during the day, a sight that never fails to impress me.

![](https://images.ecency.com/DQmYgkkjZPqCGSqnYzXnuqdhH1SpvJjrpjp3Xymg3LehMoY/img_8775.png)

After some research, I discovered that, as far as is known, Tacaná has never erupted—what a relief!

I often visit the Centro, as I live about 20 minutes away by combi, the local public transport, also known as colectivo. These combis run all over the city, and each one has a sign indicating its destination. In my case, I always take the Indeco combi.

The Centro is a lively place. I’ve never seen it empty; there are always people walking the streets, shopping, selling, or simply enjoying the atmosphere. Businesses are everywhere: food stalls, exclusive shops, hotels, and much more. It is, without a doubt, the epicenter of the city’s activity.

While strolling through the Central Park, I noticed that the Mexican coat of arms is engraved on the ground along with the year 1821. Upon researching, I learned that this year marks Mexico’s independence from Spanish rule. However, it wasn’t until 1824 that Soconusco officially became part of Chiapas, and in 1882, after disputes with Guatemala, the border between the two countries was defined.

The history of Tapachula is as rich as its culture, traditions, customs, and, above all, its people.

I am very happy to live here and to continue discovering more every day about the Pearl of Soconusco.

![](https://images.ecency.com/DQmYgkkjZPqCGSqnYzXnuqdhH1SpvJjrpjp3Xymg3LehMoY/img_8775.png)
