All our schools brought the children in busses and they sat waiting as the first shot was fired at 7.30 am. This is when we set off, for the first item.

https://imgoat.com/uploads/93f65e080a/58978.jpg

The other schools arrived at about 8.30 which meant they had missed quite a few items.

They all came in short pants and vests.

Maybe this was their first experience of athletics as they all seemed flabbergasted and I felt very bad for them.

Their school did not have the facilities that our schools had like long jump pits, and hurdles, as well as anything to do with athletics. But I think the teachers did not even try.

As there were facilities available for them to use, especially at this pavilion that was the property of the town. So if they wanted to they could have brought their athlete’s here to train them. This must have been too much trouble because athletics is a lot of work for a coach.

We started practicing for this athletics meeting four months before this day, and they did not practice at all.

When the hurdles started the “sports” began.

The athlete’s from the other culture did not have the faintest idea what to do. Some thought it was high jump and other ran around the hurdles.

https://imgoat.com/uploads/93f65e080a/58976.jpg

Unfortunately we had to disqualify most of them. When they got to the finish line they did not stop running and we had to stop them, as they had no idea where they were.

When we started the 80 and 100 metres they started running when they heard on your marks, instead of waiting and we had to call them back a few times to explain how it works.

https://imgoat.com/uploads/93f65e080a/58981.jpg

With the long jump we had the same problems as they started jumping once they got to the sand. It is really not their fault, but I must say I have not laughed so much in all my life. I felt so sorry for those athletes, as the coaches were too lazy to do their work.

https://imgoat.com/uploads/93f65e080a/58982.jpg

This is why I feel that it was unfair as there were athletes that were not too bad at all with a little help they could have done very well.

We saw this in the long distance running as this is something they were used to they took most of the medals in the long distance running.

https://imgoat.com/uploads/93f65e080a/58983.jpg

But when it got to the relay I gave up.

They first did not know what a relay stick was and we explained to the best of our ability, but it is not a race that can be explained in 5 minutes.

So when it started no 1 gave to number 2 and ran with him to no 3 who he passed the stick too and then all four arrived at the winning line together.

We all had lunch afterwards and then we explained to these teachers that being coaches does not mean pitching up they must at least teach the children how to do all the items, coaching them is an extracurricular activity not something you do when you feel like it.

https://imgoat.com/uploads/93f65e080a/58985.jpg

Now, when I sit on my rock down by the sea and think about all these funny things that happened. I watch people walking by, thinking I am crazy old man. They don’t know what I am laughing about here all by myself, but these are some of my best memories.

-To be continued –

Next time Rugby and Netball.

Tomorrow will be the fun with sport.

https://imgoat.com/uploads/93f65e080a/58601.PNG

https://imgoat.com/uploads/93f65e080a/58782.gif
