Michael Glenn applies a 竹折 take ori

We warmed up with 半棒術 hanbōjutsu kihon using a tsuki to strike the kyūsho 鬼門 kimon, 声 koe, and 角 kaku. We delivered these as the opponent punched. The challenge was accuracy which was even more difficult with the 片手打 katate uchi.

I began class with 不動 Fudō. As the attacker grabs, we use a 竹折 take ori to control and steer his attack away from us. I shared a specific method of entering the take ori that allows you to use your body instead of the force of your grip to create this lock.

Next I shared a henka I learned from Oguri Sensei. This henka opens up the 竹折 take ori in eight directions. This really allows you to control space and place your opponent anywhere within it.

In another henka that I learned from Noguchi Sensei, we move the 竹折 take ori behind the back. This creates extreme pressure on the wrist. It is useful for restraining an attacker or putting him in restraints. But the takedown is devastating as he crashes down on his elbow or shoulder.

I demonstrated a free application of 竹折 take ori against any number of punches. It may seem difficult to catch a punch out of the air and apply a lock to it. It is! But you don’t try to do this. Instead you position yourself so the lock appears. It will be a surprise to both you and the opponent so it cannot be countered.

I finished be using a hidden knife to apply the 竹折 take ori. This weapon just appears while my opponent is punching. And then it becomes a very mean fulcrum for the lock.

Of Note: headaches that dissolve with violence
