 ### The smallest heroes ___ 'How many, sir? How many survived?' '3.' 'Only 3? But, we started with 2000.' 'Yes, only 3.' 'So, we're no closer to the cure?' 'No. We need at least 120 to survive to begin to work a reliable serum.' 'Is that even possible? Will we have enough?' There was a pause. 'I hope so. We only have so many before they're all gone. What hit us hit everythning. If we don't get this right and do it now, everything is done for.' 'It's been weeks though. Everyone is working on it. Everyone. And still nothing?' 'No. The best minds in the world and still, nothing. And our supplies of viable subjects is dwindling quickly. Despite where we are, no one would accept human subjects. Not yet. But, we must figure it out with what we have left.' The room goes quiet. The air pulled out from the weight of the situation. Breathing seems hard for everyone. That moment months ago when the first reports began to come in. People dropping, everywhere. No reason, just dropped. Dead. And so it went. Until there were few survivors, and even they suffered. The virus ran it's course, leaving some alive. But sterile. Another, longer lasting, more final death. So now it was down to the smallest of heroes. The mice. ___ ### First off, just wanted to say I am really, really stoned right now. My buddy and I were about to head out for munchies and snacks to get ready for a small party we're having when we found out his car needed a jump. So, in true form while waiting we did something called 'dabbing.' Basically smoking a concentrated form of THC which gives a strong, unique high. I got the craving to write, so here I am. The prompt did have me scratching my head for a minute. I mean, what do you write about mice? I have no strong memories of them as a child. A hamster, yes, but mice, no. So, where could I take it from there? I wanted to make it interesting, so what kind of story about mice could be compelling enough to read? Zombies...I could have done that...told a story from the viewpoint of a feasting mouse? Maybe a zombie mouse, from it's perspective? Or maybe mice were the cause of zombies? But, no. No zombies...I felt my last story was a bit evil and dark, so, perhaps lighter? Plague virus? Yup, sounds much lighter. Guffaw-enducing if you ask me, compared to zombies. Sort of. But, could I tilt it positive? ...unsure outcomes with limited chances, maybe not so positive. That kind of ending could be left to the reader and their predisposition to having hope in mankind, or not. Yeah, that works for me. ### ...was kind of my mindset when I was preparing to write this. Mostly, lol. Because the whole plague thing just built off of that initial dialogue, and somehow turned itself into a kind of a story as it went. A high pressure situation because of The Most Dangerous Writing App's short temper with deleting entire pieces if you don't keep up combined with this lovely high led to some interesting results. I hope you enjoyed this little piece of writing by me. Love y'all for dropping by and joining me. Hope everyone has a fantastic evening :) ## Wessel
