Please read @fisteganos "Days before the days" before reading my analysis on it. ##### Days before the days *** Today I felt it. It was familiar, but nothing like it used to be. It was subtle. It was gentle. It was like the truth within. Windows were shut, doors were locked. The shield for a king guarded my heart. I longed for nothing. My heartbeat, drumming horribly but you danced like that. You let go of the hands that held you. You should maybe have been careful, If only it was yours and not your heart's decision It didnt seem right. It didnt feel right. The oil had set the gears in motion _ @fisteganos *** ##### Synopsis *** The poem depicts the thoughts that flows in the heart of a brokenhearted. It ponders on the question of what love is. It dives into love's totality and analyzes the nature of love. All these find's it's existence in the persona's failed relationship ##### Analysis *** The poem begins with the persona's attempt to describe the painful feelings he goes through as a result of the breakup. This isn't the first time the persona has experienced a breakup, he reports that "It is familiar" However, this seems to be the most painful breakup the persona has ever gone through; for "It was nothing like it used to be" What strikes about the poem is the use of words the persona uses in describing his present state. The persona describes his painful feelings as "the truth within". Truth stems from the heart. It is where our darkest self lies. It is where our darkest and deepest secrets lies. Our heart defines who we truly are. Hence, despite the facade behind our thoughts, our actions and our speeches, there can never be a facade of what we truly are within. Hence, the truth that lies within is biting and tormenting. This just gives a clear picture of the pitiable state the persona finds himself. Furthermore, a beautiful use of understatement is used to capture the persona's feeling; It was subtle - line 4. It was gentle - line 5. The fact that it was subtle and gentle contrasts with the truth within. Think about this, when is man gentle the most? - It is in the face of death! That is why a lot of people just seem to give everything up in the face of death and not try to survive. They are calm but yet burning within. Also like a widow who stops grieving for her husband, she knows he can never come back, there is that calm state from such realization but still she is on fire. This is a clear example of the persona's state. The nature of love is revealed even more in stanza two. Love is depicted as one that breaks boundaries. Love defies laws. Love is it's own boss. Take a good look at the following nouns, "windows" "door" and "shield" They give a clear idea of confinement and most especially related to this poem is the idea of protection and restriction that the nouns give. Despite the fact that the "windows were shut", "doors were locked" and the fact that "the shield for a king guided my heart" what still happens? Now, the persona could have done all that to prevent himself from falling in love but he still falls in love. He could also have done that to prevent himself from getting hurt but in fact he gets really hurt that his "heartbeat drums horribly" The fact that it is even a king's shield! but it failed to protect shows the turbulent aspect of love. The other half of the poem makes a turn and focuses on the heart-breaker. "My heart drummed horribly but you danced like that" In this line, the fact that the heart-breaker and the brokenhearted go though tumults of pain as a result of a heartbreaking case is depicted. Most times, a lot of people make the mistake of thinking the only person who gets their heart broken is the one who initiates whatever the heartbreaking issue may be. Now, to the interesting part of the poem which I love alot I.e the concluding stanzas. This part present themes such as self- conflict. I can also draw a comparism to @johnjgeddes poem which I analyzed few days ago. Both poem thrives on the fact that humans are made up of different selves. The human is composed of different forces that makes him up. This can even account for the different definitions of heart, body, mind and soul as defined by scientist and philosophers. Sometimes our actions defile our words and vice versa and I can rightly come to the conclusion that the heart-breaker would have loved to stay. See the lines below; "If only it was yours and not your heart's decision" What does this tell us? That there is a difference between the heart-breaker's want and output. It also depicts the strong power of the heart. It presents the power of love. With this scenario, humans then seem to be like puppets in the hands of their hearts. This is so true because we cannot determine when, how and whom we want to fall in love with. If we choose and want someone, our hearts will choose otherwise. It also depicts humans weakness in their attempt to fight their heart and hold on to their will. Despite the windows, the door and shield, the persona still falls in love or he still gets his heart broken Selena Gomez was really right when she stated in her song that "The heart wants what it wants" # Conclusion *** This is a very beautiful and fantastic poem by @fisteganos. It is rich with simile, understatement and symbols. @fisteganos in his poem portrays that love separates but unite. Such that at the end of the poem, an understanding ensued. The poem is filled with a lesson for all, especially the fact that love is a force that can bring about peace, understanding and forgiveness. That is why the persona in @fisteganos poem doesn't lash out hurtful words neither does he get angry or blames his heart-breaker rather the persona respects the heart-breaker's wish. The speaking voice understands the fact that the heart wants what it wants. Thus, @fisteganos wants everyone to emulate this. While presenting the harsh sides of love, @fisteganos presents it's loving sides as well. How excellent! Beautiful written! Superb! Amazing! ___ ### works cited @fisteganos: "Days before the day".
