“Just follow your passion.” is probably the worst piece of advice anybody could ever give another person. It is mostly given by people who aren’t following their passions. If you talk to truly visionary people who are following their dreams the quest of passion becomes clearer: Here are my favorite answers to “How to find your passion.” 1. Sam Kass - Chef for the Obamas “Passion is an overstated word. I think passion develops… I threw myself into food and although I was passionate about it, it wasn’t a life passion until I combined food and nourishment with health, sustainability, politics, policy, and what we're doing to really help make sure that all people ca live healthy, productive, awesome lives through the food that they’re eating. That is what became that passion… A lot of people say, “Find your passion.” I think passion comes from a combinations of being open and curious, and of really going all-in when you find something that you’re interested in.” 2. Mark Manson - Author of Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck Look at the things you’re already doing and talking about and the things you did for fun as a kid. “A child does not walk onto a playground and say to herself, “How do I find fun?” She just goes and has fun. If you have to look for what you enjoy in life, then you’re not going to enjoy anything. And the real truth is that you already enjoy something. You already enjoy many things. You’re just choosing to ignore them.” - Mark Manson on his blog Not knowing is the whole fucking point. Life is all about not knowing, and then doing something anyway. All of life is like this. All of it. The problem is not a lack of passion for something. The problem is productivity. The problem is perception. The problem is acceptance.” - Mark Manson Blog 3. Will MacAskill - Author of Doing Good Better “Follow your passion is terrible advice. It misconstrues the nature of finding a satisfying career and satisfying job, where the biggest predictor of job satisfaction is mentally engaging work. It’s whether the job provides a lot of variety, gives you good feedback, allows you to exercise autonomy, continues to the wider world.” 4. Cal Newport - Author of So Good They Can’t Ignore You ”Why do some people end up loving what they do, while so many others fail at this goal?” Cal Newport on why “follow your passion” is terrifically bad advice: “the conventional wisdom on career success— follow your passion— is seriously flawed. It not only fails to describe how most people end up with compelling careers but for many people, it can make things worse: leading to chronic job shifting and unrelenting angst…” 5. The Holstee Manifesto This is your life. Do what you love, and do it often. If you don’t like something, change it. If you don’t like your job, quit. If you don’t have enough time, stop watching TV. If you are looking for the love of your life, stop; they will be waiting for you when you start doing things you love. - The Holstee Manifesto
