Sabbaticals – One of the Last Great Work Perks

I have had the good fortune to work for one of the last tech companies that still gives sabbaticals to employees. For every 7 years an employee works, they earn an eight-week paid time-off sabbatical. It is a wonderful reprieve from working in an intense and ambiguous field.

Last week I began my 3rd sabbatical. I added two weeks of vacation at the end, just for extra fun. Ten weeks off in total!

It has taken me some time to disconnect from work and get into the right mindset. I am now staying up late, sleeping in, taking mid-day naps, and planning my activities for the next few weeks.

Tickets are now purchased. Next week my fiancé and I head to Miami for a few days, then to Maui to get married. We will spend a week with friends and family on the Valley Isle before coming home. I am playing it loose. Overall, in the the 10 weeks, I plan on getting married, enjoying Maui with my bride, deep sea sport fishing with my buddies, building a new PC rig, and possibly buying a motorcycle (it has been a few years since I rode).

My options are open and it feels great!

My advice, when looking at employment options, is to see if they offer sabbaticals. It is a very nice perk and should be taken into account as part of the overall package for consideration. If you are fortunate in earning one, take it as soon as you can. I have known several fellow employees who have delayed taking their sabbatical. Every one of them has talked about it with a little regret. As for me, I have consistently taken my sabbaticals on the very day I was eligible. I would not have changed a thing!

Although I don’t know exactly what I will be doing, where I am going, or when, I am pretty sure my immediate future will include nice cigars, aged whiskey, tall glasses of Guinness, warm beaches, beautiful oceans, bent fishing rods, new tech toys, and a sexy woman (my fiancé, soon to be wife) for company.

Sabbaticals are good.

Quoting Ferris Bueller:

“Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”

It is my time to stop and look around.
