In his Homily at Santa Marta last Jan. 21, the Holy Father Pope Francis stated that those who fill their hearts with envy are always tormented. The Holy father went further to say that envy could lead to evil desire of others good if we consent to it.

Envy as we all know, is a capital sin. It is the sadness at the sight of other’s good and the inordinate desire to unjustly acquire them for ourselves. However, envy becomes a mortal sin when it intends grave harm to a neighbor.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church in n. 2538 has this to say regarding envy:

“The tenth commandment requires that envy be banished from the human heart. When the prophet Nathan wanted to spur King David to repentance, he told him the story about the poor man who had only one ewe lamb that he treated like his own daughter and the rich man who, despite the great number of his flocks, envied the poor man and ended by stealing his lamb. Envy can lead to the worst crimes"

“Through the devil’s envy death entered the world”: We fight one another, and envy arms us against one another. . . . If everyone strives to unsettle the Body of Christ, where shall we end up? We are engaged in making Christ’s Body a corpse. . . . We declare ourselves members of one and the same organism, yet we devour one another like beasts”.

St. Augustine of Hippo saw envy as “the diabolical sin.”.

He went further to say;

“from envy are born hatred, detraction, calumny, joy caused by the misfortune of a neighbor, and displeasure caused by his prosperity.”

However, sadness and refusal to do charity are some of the characteristics of envy. As a Christian, we ought to struggle to fight against envy by exercising good will.

We should always be joyful in the progress and good of our neighbor. We should be thankful to God for blessing our neighbor. We must bear in mind that blessing is contagious, if you are happy with the progress of your neighbor, you will attract progress.

Dear steemians, let us jettison and eschew any manifestation of envy in us which corrupts human relationships, creating divisions among people and leading to grave consequences like defamation, slander, calumny, moral and physical violence and assassination (as in the case of Cain killing his brother Abel).

Let us pray to God to give us a humble heart to rejoice in the progress and good of others and be contended with what we have.

Let us also open our hearts for the Holy spirit for the Holy spirit is our greatest friend.

                                                 THANKS FOR STOPPING BY!
