The winter has gone and the sweltering heat is slowly setting in. And with the onset of summer comes a host of refreshing drinks, one of them being coconut water. Sipping the cool coconut water standing in the shade is bliss, and the white tender coconut is yummy!

We usually throw the coconut shell after drinking the water. But how about using them as natural pots to grow plants? The students of NSS IIT BOMBAY tried this out in NSS Nursery.

First, the holes were made in the bottom of the coconut, then filled with soil and transplanted with saplings. The holes in the coconut enable the roots to grow without any obstruction and also allow excess water to drain out. This way of plantation has the potential to eliminates the use of plastic covers completely. Also, we can directly transplant this into the ground and as the coconut degrades in the soil, it provides nutrients to the growing plant.
