For some reason, we love that feeling of the unknown and dangerous, and it is a feature that many of us have. This pleasure of the dark must have a scientific explanation, so now we will seek the answer to why this attitude.

Fight or flight reaction

Not all people enjoy these feelings, but it is true that a lot of us are looking for these kinds of experiences. It has a lot to do with the reaction of fight or flight , a sensation of our body, that makes us decide by impulses if we stay to fight or to run away. It has been shown that in these situations dopamine plays an important role , and while some people have a major blow to it while others don't.

This also has to do with the sense of bravery and having overcome an obstacle once we leave a haunted house or end up watching a horror movie . But other people really do not want to approach such a place. Sometimes it has to do with traumas caused in childhood, when our mind is more inclined to play tricks and really frighten us of things that do not exist.

Although the chemicals released by our brain during the fight or flight reaction may give some people an interesting feeling, for others they are simply fears that settle in memories as traumas, which has to do with the flashbulb memory , key moments that mark us deeply.

Safe Situation

It is not the same to frighten us in a place that we know for sure, as an attraction in a park or a film in the cinema, than when we don't really know whats happening and takes us by surprise. While the first feeling is fun, the second may not be so much fun. To really enjoy it, our brain must respond to visual and auditory sensations by releasing chemicals, but at the same time it must realize that everything is false and that we are in a safe place.

Everything we consider terrifying has to do with our social context and what we have learned. Practically everything can cause fear if they teach us that it should be so, therefore the objects that cause fear are often different in each culture. However, there is one thing in common: fearful creatures often violate natural laws. That is why we do not like at all the idea of ghosts, or beings that have nothing to do with something known in nature.

The main reason we enjoy being afraid is that it is a very strong sensation that remains in our memory, in addition to releasing dopamine and adrenaline . These kinds of intense moments are remembered not only by us, but also by those who are at our side enjoying.
