My mother is a very strong woman. This year we have a huge surprise in store for her on Mothers day. Since I met my siblings yesterday. This seemed like the best time to write one lesson from her that we have learnt along the years of living with her.

While my mothers lessons are mostly practical this one was very mental. She so often had us thinking of who we are and for what purpose we were intended for. She still does. So for a mother of five her life was cut out to create instructions for women and men who later grew to be opinionated, independent yet loving, caring and passionate all the same. Some would say that most of the characteristics we posses were instilled by our mother. But, our dad did his share to.

# Some memories where I had to be myself, Learn to appreciate myself and retain my uniqueness.

## Relationships ##

My parents do not have a fault free relationship, they have however, been married for 40 years and that alone serves as a model relationship. While circumstances for when they got together are different with the current situations. I look at how they relate and decisions they make. How much they love each other and acknowledge it. How much they get on each other's nerves but still present a united front when need be. How they can still be silly with each other. How much they know each other, involve each other in their lives and how much they have influenced us as they children.

My mother has instilled a few lessons to us girls on how to be and to treat our significant others. She is always open to give advice and I am most impressed at how she behaves as a mother in law.

In relationships, I have to remain true to myself and the person I am with. I have to remain honest and not lie about who, what or where I am. I have to learn to trust people and in doing so let them love me truly for who I am and not a picture perfect me. Recently I found such a person and was lucky enough to introduce him to my parents.

## Owning my mistakes, errors and wrong doing ##

My sister was a teen mother. While this was really tough for my parents to deal with, they embraced her, she had her baby and they took him in. Brought him up and my sister had a chance to go back to school. We would have expected our parents to hide our sister as she could have been termed as an embarrassment but they didn't. My mother told her that she had to own her consequences, see the pregnancy to term and only then would she be able to go back to school. This was one lesson, maybe the biggest we encountered.

For small things like taking what was not yours or for throwing things away, or for spoiling things in the house, our mother always seemed like she had 10 eyes. She knew everything we were doing and there was no need to lie.

If you were not doing well in class. A few questions from mum and you would be answering why you thought it wasn't so.

We all make mistakes, We all do wrong. The major question then remains, how do we react after that. how do we move past that? How do we ensure that we correct and not repeat the error. Also from my mother I learnt that admitting you are wrong is a very strong trait.

## High school ##

At the beginning high school was not my cup of tea. I was from a middle class family and others came from very well off families. While in our village we might have been the richest, able to afford all manner of luxuries. In high school I cam to discover we were barely existing. People had means. People had money and used it on things I wouldn't ever imagine. At the beginning thus I was very insecure, Lucky for being a bright student and the lessons from my parents, I overcame all that and went ahead to do very well and create a tonne of friends.
My mother always told us it is not the quantity but the quality of what you do with what you have. My other motivation was my father saying we can have all the luxuries if we worked hard and smart to afford them ourselves. And for that I was going to study hard to ensure a slot for me to be able to afford whatever I needed in the future.

# Has it all rosy with my mother

Well, No. like other kids we fight with our mum, we disagree, especially now that we are all grown up. It has become sort of a democracy where we brainstorm issues and come up with solutions.

Growing up, disagreeing with mum would have earned you some beating and the ever used statement "Under my house my rules reign, it is not a democracy" Hahahaha. She said this with a very serious face and no one would have defied her.

Still I feel she has earned herself a medal for being a model parent, we love her so much and wish her a long long life.
