myday #43 - I Photographed a Butterfly in Flight - It's Harder Than It Sounds!

What a beautiful day to be out photographing butterflies.
Trying to get this butterfly in focus proved to be a huge challenge! Let me explain...

For those of you who are not familiar with photography, I photographed this butterfly at a very large aperture, which means there is only a small amount of subject in focus at one time.

That's essentially what f4 means - _you may see this number under my photos from time to time_. The smaller the number (f4, f2, f1.2) results in a greater the depth of field - meaning you will have more of areas out of focus.

As a comparison, if I had photographed the butterfly at f22, the foreground and the background would both be in focus. The end result would have been hard to seperate the butterfly from the background, it would have become lost in the sea of grass.

That's why when you photography wildlife you want to use an aperture of around f4 or f2.8 as your foreground subject will be separated from the background, ensuring you get that professional look that creates depth in your image.

Going back to the butterfly shots I captured, what was hard about photographing these photos at f4 was I had to press the camera's shutter button when the butterfly flew into focus.

There was only a small window of opportunity to do this. If the butterfly had flown 2mm away from me or even a few millimetres closer it would have been out of focus.

Maintaining correct focus was of course the hardest part of this images - just because the butterfly kept moving in the flying shots! So, if you were watching me take these photos you would have seen a photographer on his knees shuffling around continuously at ground height trying to follow a butterfly - it would have been a funny site!

I'm Leigh, from Sydney Australia and through @steemit I'm seeing what its like to explore @myday. Not in any particular order, or particular time frame but just parts of @myday through my eyes and sometimes the cameras lens.
