En diferentes previas sobre este juego hubo muchas personas se dejaron llevar por la actualidad de ambos clubes y esperaban que hubiera un dominio en el juego y resultado por parte del ManCity; otras especialistas en el tema fueron cautelosos y hablaban sobre una lucha de ideas, un juego de estrategias como ocurre en el ajedrez, para ser sincero puedo decir que pienso que estoy de acuerdo con las dos ideas o las expectativas que expresaban los aficionados, periodistas y cualquier personalidad dentro del fútbol, esto lo digo porque esperaba el dominio total por parte del City, pero también esperaba el sacrificio y la concentración de los jugadores del Atleti al defender y pienso que en el momento de cambiar piezas para refrescar el juego, es ahí donde pueda aparecer los errores que harían cambiar por completo el juego. Para los primeros 90 minutos de eliminatoria no había dudas de que el Atleti jugaría de una forma defensiva, tal como ha sucedido en sus últimos encuentros en dónde mantiene una racha positiva tanto en La Liga como en la UCL, jugar con una línea de cinco defensores, con dos laterales de proyección rápida, tres mediocampistas  y dos delanteros rápidos, este mismo esquema lo usó Simeone cuando enfrentó al Manches United en los octavos de final, la diferencia para este juego fue que los tres de medio campo si diferenciaban en tener a un puesto 5 fuerte en marca como Kondogbia y de interiores a Koke y Llorente, uno con un buen pase largo y llegada al área rival y otro con la velocidad para atacar y defender por la banda derecha; el uso de estos tres jugadores a pesar de que dos tienen vocación ofensiva, más que nada estaba para cubrir espacios y ayudar a las bandas para ser más compacto al equipo, estas características también las cumplió sus dos delanteros los cuales no tuvieron ocasiones por lo lejos que estaban del arco defendido por Ederson; con este orden y sacrificio defensivo el equipo del Cholo contuvo la ofensiva de su poderoso rival, 45 minutos en dónde no hubo ocasiones de gol para ninguno de los dos equipos, pero con esto daba la sensación de que el equipo de Pep cayó en la trampa planeada por Simeone y sus jugadores.
