Doom's Division has been alright so far, but nothing particularly special. There's a lot of comics that I read and thoroughly enjoy but don't end up writing about here on Hive. Most of the ones I do read tend to be monthly releases that are harder to keep track of and are part of a broader narrative of some sort. Hive ending up being the thing that helps keep me aware of the narratives and their releases and where I am in them by writing about them and having an actual log in place in the end. Doom's Division is something I read to get a bit more context into the One World Under Doom story, much like I have been reading the ongoing story of Thunderbolts: Doomstrike. Though Doom's Division hasn't been all that strong, it's something that really tries to do something different within that world and I don't mind it for that, but it doesn't feel like it's offering a whole lot so far at the same time.

Capable of giving us more world building, showcasing that various struggles of heroes within the world under Doom's reign. And that's sort of what it aimed to do to begin with. To reveal a broader context. The first two issues did somewhat achieve this, it did have a decent start, but there has been a gradual decline just three issues in.

With this story taking place mostly within Asia, we're seeing mixtures of cultural imagery and the environment of Doom's new creation of the world as a technologically and magically advanced alleged utopia. Though this sudden arrival of a supposed utopia has many up in arms over whether Doom truly has the right intentions, especially for the heroes which are starting to witness that they're actually mostly unnecessary now. Much of the criminal underworld suddenly taken care of, and they're witnessing first-hand the means by which this is achieved. The recent creation of Doom's Division itself has many heroes starting to question their role in it all and whether it's even ethical to continue from here on. Realising that their presence is essentially to ensure that the new status quo under Doom is maintained, just additionally enforcing his rule when more desperate means turn up. Beings with super powers now enforcing the rule of a newly-appointed leader that claims rule over the world? That doesn't sound particularly democratic now, does it?

With members of the Doom Division now turning on each other, these two issues have mostly been summing up a little conflict between them, witnessing how they're struggling to accept their new positions within the world. It hasn't been all that eventful, most of it just average panels featuring a bit of fighting. The odd bit of drama as the two clash and discuss their differences. I get the importance of displaying this turmoil within the world, especially given it context it offers to the One World Under Doom universe. Heroes don't just up and disappear (at least not in every story, and we have actually seen that in others) because Doom wins the world over. They have a new position, new roles to play. And some accept them, others reject them.

So far things haven't been amazing. The story itself started off interesting, but in the end we've had two issues that have ultimately summed up something that could've been said and dealt with within just one. It feels a little bit stretched out to just remind us of something we already understood. I enjoy the cultural themes and seeing the more unique perspective of this world due to the location, even down to the characters, but it just feels like it's a bit too slow and lacking. I'm sticking with it, I just hope it manages to find its footing soon.
