But one of the most beautiful and intriguing things about this state is that it is different and unique for everyone. There are so many possible combinations, aren’t there?** I’ve been reflecting on this, because it’s also true that our surroundings can be decisive in how happy we feel. It’s not the same, for instance, to have a space of one’s own, as it is to live with people who neither share your interests nor make life easy in any way. And yet, perhaps there’s something—something we often overlook: the little things that help us sustain that state of joy, so full of good energy in itself and, when nurtured, capable of attracting more of the same. I mentioned names for happiness, didn’t I? Well, let’s list a few: companionship, creation, memory, refuge, free time… and of course, there are many more. I’m certain that if you stir your thoughts a little, other names will rise to the surface—ones born from your own experience or perhaps someone close to you. For me, for example, happiness goes by the name of creation, solitude, nature, sea, photography, cycling, and awareness. That last one—let’s speak of it—can be translated as the ability to perceive the invisible connections we share with everything and everyone in this world. It’s so incredible, so deeply moving, that I often find myself crying tears of joy when I’m in that state of, let’s say, illumination. <center> <img src="https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/nanixxx/23yd8DDKxKXeiQRbU4R5MbrPqnSogrGabiT5SZCZLQr7nXLgXivYSytkdSz5NHNtK6VAr.JPG" alt="$1"> </center> Just yesterday, in fact, I was trying to compose a mental list of the things that bring me that kind of happiness I try to preserve, despite all the daily challenges that might try to pull me down. Tell me—could you make a list of ten things? Or just five? It doesn’t matter if they’re a little extravagant. Would you be up for sharing them here? Here’s my short list (though I’m leaving many things out): 1. Seeing a hummingbird perched or darting among the flowers, in that way only they know. 2. Lighting incense just before taking a bath or before going to sleep. 3. Sweating when I ride my bicycle. 4. Making someone I deeply care about laugh. 5. Letting my intuition guide me and then realising I made the right choice. 6. Hearing a lyric in a song that reminds me of a happy moment or a tender wish I hold in my heart. 7. Swimming in a river of cold water. 8. Getting caught in a downpour while cycling. 9. Watching the sunrise or sunset, alone or beside someone very dear. 10. The moon… simply gazing at it or whispering my thoughts to it. 11. The smell of coffee. 12. The smell of freshly baked bread. 13. Marking off completed wishes in my manifestation notebook. 14. Waking up each morning. 15. Feeling safe and loved. 16. The scent of my shoes and clothes when I take them off. Many of us—myself included—believe that under certain circumstances we’ll be happier. And so, we often postpone enjoying the things that truly nourish us, hoping for that moment to arrive… which might never come. Knowing in detail what makes us happy, being able to list it, to spot joy in new experiences—that, I believe, is fundamental in life. Because it keeps our focus on seeking and embracing those precious moments, and helps us sustain a state of grace that endures. No matter where we are—or under what circumstances. <center> <img src="https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/nanixxx/23yTYQuaSRuvwYuwRr2zo5Z3CK8HhGzv294pnQ715mxh1Uj23CffQnZ6ELge1ckg63eb9.JPG" alt="$1"> </center> For instance, I write, and I’m happy. While writing, good ideas often come to me—ideas I later put into practice. When inspiration hits, I feel an earthquake of happiness within me. And so it goes… so many fleeting moments, sensations. That’s it: to feel, to observe, to live in the now. Things are always changing—the people around us, their behaviours, their judgments. But we have a great power: the ability to choose what we think. So don’t wait to choose the present over some distant tomorrow. Don’t wait—start filling your mind now with thoughts that build you into someone better, someone who inspires.
