From the title you may think that I'm making some kind of outlandish claim calling this location 'SculptureHeaven' but actually this is the name of the gardens haha I thought it was a great experience so I wanted to share my thoughts with you today and also some photography to compliment. It's an inspiring story and is literally located in the middle of nowhere. SculptureHeaven is located near Cardigan Bay in West Wales and is owned by a sculptor, Terry Barter, who moved to Wales in 1995 and set up a small sculpture workshop in his back garden. Slowly over time he turned his 2 acre field in to a productive garden full of sculpture, later in 2008 opening it to the public as part of an 'Open Studio' initiative that saw many people come and support this venture. On my visit I was able to walk through the workshop and have a look around the garden, at the end of my tour I sat in the small cafe and had some delicious freshly baked cake and a cup of tea. The sculptures are focused around the idea of meditation and contemplation, hoping to create a space that combines zen and other concepts in to one. Although it's a little quirky and off the beaten path it's an experience that I will always remember and is one that is sure to stick with me for a long time to come. It's funny how somewhere like this can really bring out the creativity in your photography and inspire to take different pictures that you would usually. But to be honest, most of the time I just sat peacefully and wanted to take in my surroundings. "Learn to be still" was the message I took away with me.
More from my Travels in Japan: Exploring Melbourne - A Visit to the Tapestry Workshop Abstract Rocks in Wilsons Promontory National Park in Victoria, Australia Exploring Los Angeles - A Visit to the Neutra VDL Research House Exploring Wilsons Promontory National Park in Victoria, Australia Exploring Los Angeles - A Visit to the Getty Centre and Museum Exploring Los Angeles - A Visit to the Stahl House by Pierre Koenig
Please follow me @oen for more interesting art, design and travel content.
