Goodmorning everyone, in this tribe of my blessed homeland. I hail all of una o. My name is Eliakim O. Wamuonso, an easy going fellow and a lover of truth. I first heard of this location via @iamchuks, who only recently graciously submitted a blog of mine to you people for curation(and you guys blessed me with a good upvote). Also, I got to notice this contest via a friend, @adaezeinchrist's page. Wish I could say more but please a contest is upon us. Here's my focus: 1️⃣We all have that one skill, either acquired or inherent in us that outshines our other skills and we are almost certain that we can do it better than most people. What skill is that and how has it impacted your daily life? # I BEGIN Evolution it is for me. My Dad is a Mechanical Engineer of repute in Nigeria– a former President and high ranking Fellow of the NSE(Nigerian Society of Engineers). I therefore attended a primary and secondary school owned by the then largest steel company in Nigeria(Delta Steel Company). My Dad was a senior staff in this company whose staff were mostly Engineers. Such well run schools that had a bias for Engineering, helped me uncover my appetite for Engineering. In Secondary School, we offered Applied Electricity and Basic Electronics as subjects up to Senior School Certificate level. I immediately was drawn to Basic Electronics and duly went in to study Electrical/Electronics Engineering in the University. However, in the midst of all these, there was an underlying brewing of a certain ability. ### THE TWIST Once I was in the University and I bought a certain biscuit and in just my first bite, it was so amazing to my taste bud. Quickly, I checked behind the biscuit pack to see where it was made and I saw it boldly written, "made in Nigeria" with the Nigerian 🇳🇬 flag to match. I was surprised as, with all due respect, we don't see such tasty products or even quality products(generally) produced locally. If there was, they will usually mask it by labeling it as coming from a country whose products are trusted. This was around 2004 and the biscuit was Beloxxi Crackers Biscuit. I felt so impressed by this that straightaway I decided to write them, to encourage them to keep up the great work. It was the days of letter writing, so I penned down a letter and posted to them via the post office. I took that as my unsolicited obligation to support quality and forgot about it. Shockingly a few weeks later, I received a call from the Head(or Manager) of Human Resources or something like that. She said the company has received my letter and they are so impressed by what they saw. Instantly, they invited me to come and visit their company. I told my room-mate(I think who was with me when that call came in) and he was so delighted for me. He reminded me, he had always been almost flummoxed with my spoken English and writing. Well, the story ends in a bit of sober note. It was the University of Lagos, far away from my home and family in Delta State, it was school test period and I couldn't meet up with the appointment and was not wise enough to keep the communication line open and at least reschedule the visit. You know, I didn't see writing as a big deal. I wrote that letter to Beloxxi easily, freely penning down my thoughts. So what the Manager was calling so amazing, wasn't really so special to me. Ofcourse, today with the benefit of hindsight, I think I shouldn't have let that opportunity slip. Well, it's now many years later and writing has now risen to a place of prominence in my life. Electrical Engineering has basically been relegated to the background. By the way, my mum is an astute English teacher who has retired from Government service(as per normal age regulation), but she's so good that she works as an English and Literature consultant right now. So I guess it runs in the blood. 😉 A few years back when I began to enthrone writing to where it belongs in my life, I will send my write-ups to her for critique and she will have virtually nothing to correct. Then she would smile and say, she doesn't understand how an Engineer of a son became such a proficient writer. Ladies and Gents, na so I see am o, that's me now. Writing is a huge part of my world now and it has given me a great platform to influence lives positively and harvest productive relationships to enhance me in this field. Many cheers.
