Splinterlands Social Media Challenge - Beginner's Guide - Equalizer
Hello everyone! This is my first entry for this week's Splinterlands Social Media Challenge. Today, I'll talk about Equalizer and a big mistake new players tend to make when playing games with it.

<div class="text-justify">Equalizer is one of my favorite ways to play Splinterlands because it makes certain niche cards amazing! It is a rule set where all units' initial HP is equal to the unit with the highest HP. This doesn't just count your units, but all units on the field. I'm pretty sure many players have thought it just counted their team for this. To be fair, that would also be an interesting rule set that I would like to see implemented someday. However, Equalizer does count both teams. The first conclusion to this is that there is no need to choose one high HP unit. In fact, choosing one of those, sacrificing other stats, or spending more mana on it, is the first step to losing the game. Unless your game plan involves a lot of healing abilities and sustain, there is no reason to even look at the HP of your units.</div>

<div class="text-justify">Thinking the game uses the highest HP of your own team is not the biggest mistake one can make in Equalizer. There is another mistake that will most likely cost you the game if you do it. And I've seen it not just in the lower leagues. That huge mistake is not placing a full team, or, at least, a team with as many units as you can (some combination of restrictive rule sets and low mana cap can lead to not having enough mana to fill all the slots). There are other rule sets where it is beneficial to have as many units as possible. Holy Protection, which grants Divine Shield to all units, is one, and Born Again, where every unit has Rebirth, is another. But Equalizer is where it makes the most difference.</div>

<div class="text-justify">Let's take a look at some games where I found players make this mistake.</div>

<div class="text-justify">This is a good example of this mistake. 32 mana is enough to be able to fill up all slots easily, and both players had summoners at the same level. The player at the top wanted to use Quora. That may or may not be a mistake, but there was still enough mana left to place 5 more units. Instead, they opted for two 5 mana units and another 6 mana unit. The bottom player easily won since they had more attackers and were dealing more damage. They could probably have focused a bit more on attacking the back. A good switch would have been Uraeus instead of Halaran Huntress. Still, their team trampled the top player because they had more units.</div>

<div class="text-justify">This time, the difference in number of units is just one. However, on top of the unit count difference, the top player opted for a better summoner in the rule set, and Disintegrator further increased the gap in the team's attack power. The bottom player might only have the soulbound summoners, but they could have given themselves a better shot. There's no reason to use Grum and tie up so much mana in just one unit. Their own Disintegrator, plus some other unit, would have been much better.</div>

# Conclusion

<div class="text-justify">This is not a high-level tip. I'm sure most players here already know this. However, if we get new players, it might be useful for them.</div>
