Joshua Tree • B&W Invert
**Joshua Tree • B&W Invert**
<hr>
I shot this Joshua Tree in the Mojave desert in California. The black and white invert photograph shows the detail of texture on the tree trunk and the spiky leaves on it's branches. The Joshua tree is only found in the Mojave high desert environment and does not appear anywhere else in the world. The tree received its common name, Joshua, from Mormon settlers that first encountered it in the mid-19th Century on their travels West. For them, it resembled the prophet Joshua with outstretched arms praising god. The scientific name is Yucca brevifolia. Like most desert plants it has an extensive root system and can live for hundreds of years. With the Mojave desert being so close to Hollywood, the Joshua tree has become ubiquitous in films, commercials and music videos as most desert scenes are shot out there.
