At night, when everyone is lost in the land of dreams, that is, everyone who chooses to fall asleep, the Great Spirit sent a Messenger to each of the disgruntled animals, to hear their complaints, and see what could be done about them. The Messenger came first to the Hare, apparently troubled despite being fast asleep in her warren.

“What is your discomfort, fleet one?” asked the Messenger.

“Oh great one,” replied the Hare, “my life is weary because I have things hard for me. I would very much love it if my life was as easy as that of my friend, the Tortoise. He does not know just how lucky he is, and keeps complaining about what I believe is a little issue in his life.”

“Is that right?” asked the Divine Messenger. “What if you were to become a Tortoise for just one day? Would that make you happy?”

“Oh certainly,” replied the Hare. “As a matter of fact, I would very much love it if my being a Tortoise was forever.”

The Messenger chuckled. “Do not be too hasty about that,” said the Messenger. “First be a Tortoise for a day, and if you still love such a life, I shall implore the Great Spirit to make your alteration permanent.”

In her sleep, the Hare thanked the Messenger and the Great Spirit, and slept a lot less fitfully.

To the Tortoise also came the Messenger, while the former tossed and turned restively in his sleep, as he stayed curled up in his shell, in the tangled undergrowth.

“You seem troubled, armored one,” said the Messenger.

“Why won’t I, illustrious one,” replied the Tortoise, “when I am despairing of life. And as though it is a trivial matter, my close friend, the Hare doesn’t understand how blessed she is, and just keeps complaining about a trivial matter of hers.”

“Indeed, is it?” asked the Messenger, noting the close similarities between the slumbering Tortoise and his close acquaintance, the Hare. “If you please, you may live one day of your life as a Hare. Might you want that?”

“One day is too short!” exclaimed the Tortoise. “Why not allow me be a Hare for the rest of my life?”

The Messenger shook his head. “Perhaps, but not yet. Spend a day as a hare,” said the Divine Servant, “and afterwards, I will petition the Great Spirit to keep you ever so, should you be pleased with such a life.”

The Tortoise, overjoyed, expressed his gratitude to the Great Spirit and the Messenger, who left him to more pleasant dreams.
