Simplicity Is Key.! Why We Should Rebrand Voting Power As A Tip Jar.
I think the one thing here on steemit that everyone agrees on is that the site should go mainstream and to do that we need to appeal to the everyday average user, who just wants to log on after a long day at work kick back and relax . But I'm sorry to say the way things are we stand little chance of that when something as simple as upvoting a post leads to the level of confusion we are currently seeing when it comes to the hardfork changes there is a problem.

Steemit is full of very clever people

And I love that it is. I have slightly above average intelligence and love to learn, so mixing with people who punch above my weight on the IQ scale is thrilling, My instant gratification monkey loves finding new quests of learning when my sensible decision maker is harping on about some mind numbing task that I should be getting on with.

>"Look Sarah, someone's posted about the possible transmutational effects of quantum particle loops in a real time dimensional vortex manipulator.
The dishes can wait you need to know this shit!"
>Instant gratification monkey

But going mainstream means appealing to those with users who don't want to spend weeks learning how to use a site and understand the currency. Which why the SBD is great, it's an instantly recognisable figure that Mr. Average can look at and say "Hey Mrs. A, Mr. Clever next door just earned enough on a website to pay the rent, we should try it!" it's enough to make Mr. A want to learn.

Simplicity is key

The same cannot be said for the voting/curation system especially with the upcoming hardfork Mr. A reads a post, likes the post and wants to upvote a post. He doesn't want to read a post then have to think about how much of his power to give it without fully understanding the concept, to work out how many posts he can actually like and reward or how much his reward is worth.
In fact, Mr. A doesn't like being told he can only do so much of anything and the merger curation rewards when you start out aren't incentive enough to want to learn.

To put it simply most of us just don't want to deal with percentages when we don't have to. so do us a favour and make it as easy for us as possible. Instead of voting power and weight show us a figure we can instantly recognize. (it's all still going on in the background we just don't need to see it)

The Tip Jar!

The Tip Jar will show voting power in a straight forward SBD amount letting us know exactly how much we have to reward posts and comments with each day. It refills in the same way voting power does but doesn't involve the learning curve or the need to think in percentages when we don't want to. We can see the total dropping and adjust our votes accordingly.

When we upvote a post the slider would show SBD enabling us to decide quickly how much we want to give the post or comment before moving on to the next read.

The Game Changer

Let us top up our tip jars this will allow minnows to compete with bots and whales for those curation rewards and help distribute SBD much quicker than the current rate.

If I earn $100 I could click on my tip jar and simply transfer as much or as little as I like to my tip fund. Top ups wouldn't deplete in a use it or lose it way, so when voting these would be used after you regular supply has been depleted and could carry extra weight as the user is giving directly from their own funds to support the post.

These changes could combat the chase the whale vote mentality that currently exists with curation and lead to content getting to the leader boards in a more natural way. As well as resulting in fewer people writing for whales and getting on with the job of writing for the wider audience.

Bounty

If there is support for this Idea I will ask the whales to support a bounty on it as I don't currently have the funds to do so myself.
