Dans ce tableau intitulé "les masques singuliers",  les personnages masqués ont été multipliés pour composer une scène de carnaval. Il est composé de couleur vives qui transcrivent  l'ivresse de la fête et d'une lumière que James Ensor recherchait dans ses œuvres. "Lumière est ma fille" disait-il, "Lumière pain du peintre".

C'est une vision du monde qu'il nous offre avec ces personnages sans corps qui dissimulent leurs drames. Selon les termes de l'artiste lui même : "Dans cette oeuvre,  idéal et matière,réalité et imagination marchent enlacés vers un bout d'horizons".


*In this painting entitled "the singular masks", the masked characters were multiplied to compose a carnival scene. It is composed of bright color that transcribe the jubilation of the festival and a light that J.Ensor sought in his works. "Light is my daughter," he said, "Light painter's bread."*

*It is a vision of the world that he offers us with these characters without bodies that hide their dramas. In the words of the artist himself: "In this work, ideal and matter, reality and imagination walk entwined to end of horizons".*
