The Squonk: A Fearsome Critter
Said to inhabit the hemlock forests of northern Pennsylvania, the squonk is perhaps the most dreary and sad of the otherwise comical [fearsome critters](https://steemit.com/folklore/@pinkspectre/fearsome-critters).

The squonk is noted for its heinous appearance, a small mammal somewhat resembling a wrinkly hog, covered with warts and blemishes upon its ill-fitting skin. Embarrassed by its hideous appearance, the squonk makes every attempt to stay away from judging eyes.

Even the (fictional) Latin name of the creature denotes sadness: “Lacrimacorpus dissolvens”. This is composed of the Latin words meaning tears, dissolve, and body. This is because it is said that a captured squonk will dissolve into a puddle of tears, leaving only the liquid of its sadness behind as evidence of its existence.
