Drawing Animals with one Single Line - a good Learning Exercise.

Hi everyone! 😊

Today I wanted to do a particular sketching exercise ; drawing animals with one single line.

I'm no stranger to it, as I've already done some sketches where the aim was to draw portraits without raising the wrist. The principle is quite similar here, but it's more about the principle of a line rather than not being able to lift your wrist.

Here, I am oriented on a graphic research, I am looking to make a single line, but not any line.
I was searching about an aesthetic line, which can resume the animal in a good way, so that you can guess which one it is from this one single line.

So let's go to see my attempts.

At first I tried to draw dogs. As you can see, the first ones in the left side looks really graphicals, it makes me think about these balloons twisted into the shape of an animal, you see?
But I understood that with this manner, I couldn't get different breeds easily. All looks the same. I can play with proportions but it's not evident.

The three at the bottom are more complex and we can see three different breeds, even if for me they are not optimal in my opinion (I like the left one but not the others two 😅)
Don't hesitate to tell me in the comment if you noticed the three different breeds :)

Then I go on the ducks. I tried starting the line from the bottom, from the top,... to see the different results, and then I tried to make the swan. The form of the swan is really singular, but I didn't manage to illustrate it well, it's not elegant, I didn't know where to put my line.

For the bear, I noticed that what makes the form of the bear was its giant and strong back.
So for me the best attempt is the last one, I don't think it's necessary to represent the legs to recognize the bear.

I made some researches about insects ; I first tried to make the bee. I tried to differentiate it from the wasp but it wasn't easy, as the major difference between them is the color.
Then I did a housefly and a mosquito, I don't know if you recognized them 😄
(the best mosquito is the central one, but I forgot to draw the proboscis 🤣)

My attempts of rabbit was not efficient for my opinion ; we recognize it but it's not as elegant as I wanted to. I hesitate if I were to represent the legs or not, but I think it is not necessary.

Then I tried some very recognizable animals : the elephant and the pink flamingo.
Their characteristics are so specific that it was not difficult for me to summarize them.

The same for the giraffe I think.

Also for the kangaroo.
For the lion, even he has recognizable element (its mane) it wasn't that easy to find the good way to move the line. But I think that the last simple line is the best option.

In conclusion, I would say that this is a really good exercise. We can think at first that it is really easy and a child's play, but it's not so much.
We have to change our way to draw (which is really good and enriching) and think about "what makes this animal ?" Which are its characteristics ? Where my line will start and end so that it generates an elegant shape ?

So I really suggest you to do this exercise. It's also a good practice for designing logos and stuffs like this.

Tell me in the comments if you recognized all the animals 😄

See you soon for others creations!!
