0.000 HBDAnother Race in the Books! {Local 5k Recap}

Happy Wednesday everyone! I hope you are all having a fantastic week so far. Here in the USA we are getting ready to go into a 3-day holiday weekend, so I'm just trying to push through a few more days until I get some relaxation time. Well, at least a little relaxing in between some overdue time with friends, catching up on housework, getting out my September contest, and hopefully a few runs. ;)

Speaking of running, I completed my first 5k to kick off the start of fall training this past Saturday morning. The race I participated in is a local one that was celebrating 10 years running. I couldn't find results prior to 2015, but I believe I have done at least 6 of them. Besides being close to home and supporting great children's charities, the race also starts right next to my favorite Saturday morning spot--the farmers market! You can't go wrong with that combination of getting in a speedy run followed by loading up on the local goodies.

I have been trying to be more consistent in my running lately, however I knew I was not set up yet for a personal best and just wanted to go out and do my best on that given day. The course also has quite a few hills, so I don't think it is one that usually hosts a vast number of records for any of the participants. The great thing about this year was that for once the weather was actually quite pleasant. Usually any race at the end of August here in Atlanta is going to be quite sticky (or rainy and muggy), but the weather cooled off for a few days to make for an excellent race morning. It was actually almost chilly standing around before the race start.

The race tends to be a fairly small one, with only about 600 or so participants signed up this year. There are lots of kids who join in, though, so it is always fun to see them pushing themselves and being active. I was particularly inspired by the ladies this year. I gave some encouraging words to a few of the young gals who looked like they were struggling a little bit up a few of the hills. It is always humbling when you cheer on one of them who then goes on to smoke you at the finish line! Haha, a 9-year-old gal totally left me in her dust in the last quarter mile after sticking at a pretty same pace throughout most of the rest of the race. I hope she keeps it up!

My finish time ended up being 24:19, which is right around where I usually am for this race. Looking back I was 1 second faster than last year and 12 seconds faster than the year before that. Not too shabby I suppose, especially considering it was still good enough for first in my age group. I only have a month until my next one, so we'll see if I can find it in me to train hard enough to get back down in to the 22-minute range. I am still hungry for that 21-minute range at some point. ;)

I finally scheduled my first official run/nutrition group for a week from Sunday to lead here at a local trail. I'm hoping to at least get a few people and see if I can grow from there. It should be a lot of fun to branch out more into that sphere in addition to my usual personal training and corporate classes. I'll keep you guys posted how it all goes!

(Banners by @woman-onthe-wing, @dksart & @bearone for @steemusa)
