Increasingly, I am beginning to think the real trick to this whole damn thing is developing the herd immunity. And I am beginning to suspect that all this sheltering in place is only delaying the day when we have achieved that herd immunity. I know I don't know crap about it, and most of the literature on it discusses it in relation to a vaccine which we don't yet have for this virus, and I am certainly not suggesting a big change in course at this point, but I can't help wrestling with the logic of it. It keeps nagging at my thoughts. I can't help but suspect we are doing the wrong thing by completely shutting ourselves in.

This would have been so much easier if we could have pinpointed who is most vulnerable, protected them, and then told everyone to go back to their regular lives with prudent caution. Sadly, 'the vulnerable' seems to be a moving target and health younger people are dying from it too. Not in as great of numbers, undoubtedly, but in enough quantity that we can't discount the danger just yet.

Furthermore, I have not been paying close attention to the testing or the number of total cases because we had a test kit shortage and because in many places only people showing up with symptoms were being tested. I don't put much stock in the testing figures. I watch them because they aren't going down but I don't think we really have a clue how many people have it.

It's clear many people are asymptomatic carriers and also there are many who get a little sick and stay home and beat it. But when people get sick enough that they need to be admitted to hospital, then the rubber hits the road. That is the universe in which I am crunching numbers.
