At first it looks whatever you say should be the same.
We all know that Bitcoin is a coin.
Is Ripple a token?
I know that EOS need Ethereum for fonctionning for a while
Actually there is a difference between both even though we call some of them coin, token, altcoin.

COIN

A coin is a standalone cryptocurrency that has its own blockchain.
 Bitcoin as we all know is an encrypted digital currency that can be used for a lot of thing.
 Bitcoin stores value.
Bitcoin does not need any other coins to gain value.
You can buy bitcoin right now from Coinbase or Gemini with fiat money.
Cause of Bitcoin success, there are a lot of altcoins coming to the game.
We have Litecoin, Dogecoin, recently Bitcoin cash and others.
But we have others altcoins that do not ressemble Bitcoin architecture but have their own blockchain as well.
We do have the Famous Ethereum, Cardano, NEO

TOKEN

Token are similar to coin but they are digital assets that can be trade. (BTC can be trade too)
Usually tokens are created and offered to the public as ICOs.
EOS is a good example but soon it will be converted to coin.
It will move to its main blockchain.
You have USDT(tether). 
It runs on OMNI.
OmiseGo runs on top of Ethereum.
Tron runs on top of Ethereum too.
This is why Ethereum is so valuable cause they all depend of Ethereum for their lifeline.
