#### Lore

> Portals Spinners are members of the Cult of the Rift, a faction within the Chaos Legion that harnesses rift magic to cast deadly spells.
Portal Spinners siphon life magic from their surroundings to open mini-rifts in the fabric of reality. Some thought to use these portals to travel between realms. However, after attempting to do so, many a Portal Spinner was consumed by whatever foul beasts dwelled on the other side of the portal. Others emerged... rearranged... and either dead or wishing they were dead... [[source]](https://splinterlands.com/?p=card_details&id=416&gold=false&edition=7&tab=lore)

**Portal Spinner** is an interesting unit from the life splinter that deals with 2 ranged attacks and also has a shield. But the most interesting quality is its *scattershot* ability that provides a surprising element to the battle. I sometimes use it for its heavy ranged attacks in my lineups.

### My Lineup

This is my lineup for the battle
|Position| Summoner/Monsters | Abilities |
| ------------ | ------------ | ------------ |
| Summoner | Mother Khala | +1 Health |
| Position 1 | Crystal Jaguar | *No ability* |
| Position 2 | Luminous Eagle | Flying, Reach |
| Position 3 | Stitch Leech | Sneak |
| Position 4 | Truthspeaker | Protect |
| Position 5 | Time Mage | Slow |
| Position 6 | Portal Spinner | Scattershot |

---

My summoner was Mother Khala, giving extra health points to every friendly monster. It was a 28-mana battle and there were no modifications to the rulesets.

In the first position, I placed the **Crystal Jaguar** as a low-budget tank. It has 1 shield of its own and comes with 5 health points. But it does only 1 melee damage because I chose to place heavy-hitting monsters at the next couple of positions.

In the next position, came one of the most effective units, the **Luminous Eagle**. It deals with 2 melee attacks and can attack even from the second position because of its *reach* ability. It also comes with *flying* ability that makes it harder to hit.

In the third position, I placed the **Stitch Leech**, another unit that deals 2 attack damage but is effective in this position due to its *sneak* ability. This ability will allow it to deal damage from the end of the opponent's lineup. It is a good surprising element used in battles as many low health cards are generally placed at the end at this level.

In the next position, came the **Truthspeaker**. It doesn't have any attacks but provided every friendly monster with +2 shields at the start of the battle. It only costs 3 mana but has just 1 health point.

In the fifth position, I placed my only mage of the battle in the form of **Time Mage**. It deals with quick magic attacks which can't be dodged. Along with that, it has a very unique ability to *slow* every opponent's monster by 1.

In the last position, I placed the **Portal Spinner**. It was the only unit with a ranged attack in my lineup. It comes with low health but has a shield. It has a unique ability *scattershot* which hits random monsters.

### My Strategy

My strategy was to use low-health monsters but shield them with an extra +2 shield from **Truthspeaker** and also slow my opponent and take an advantage of striking first. It worked well in the end and my opponent used a triple-ranged attack but failed miserably.

I will share my battle here, which I have uploaded to YouTube.

My opponent chose a beefy tank in the first position as **Serpent of Eld** with 3 ranged-attacking monsters while choosing the magic summoner. While I had a relatively weaker monster at the front but **Truthspeaker** gave every friendly monster 2 extra shields.
These shields took all the initial blows and somehow we both managed to survive the first round without any monsters getting off the field. But both monsters were at 1-2 hp at the end of the round which was a slight win for me.

</center>

Round2 started with both tanks getting off the field one by one. Soon the **Truthspeaker** also fell from my side but it was still looking much better. And the only mage from the opponent's lineups gets eliminated. Now only three ranged monsters remain in their camp while I still had four monsters with a different types of attacks.

I could see the win at the start of this round as ranged monsters are just ineffective at the front of the lineup. It was just a formality at this point. Soon it was over and I enjoyed a comfortable win.

> Did your strategy work? What will you try differently next time?

Yes, my strategy worked well. I used low hp monsters but buffed them with +2 shields gained from the **Truthspeaker**. It was a 28 mana cost battle that gave me greater freedom to choose my card from. It would be a slight challenge to use this strategy with lower mana cap battles.

> Do you like the PORTAL SPINNER? Why or why not?

Yes, I like the portal spinner, it is a useful asset especially when the mana cap is higher. I am not a big fan of ranged monsters but this comes with a shield of its own with 2 attack damage costing just 5 mana. And its ability has a surprising element to it which can be useful in some cases.
