Stopping a bad habit and inculcating the right one takes time before one can cross the bridge of doubt, fear, confusion etc. This is where being disciplined comes into action. The beginning of something is always hard but it becomes easier when we stick to it till we achieve the best result and in the end, it becomes a habit we wouldn't want to stop because we have realized how beneficial it is to our journey of life. </div> <div class=text-justify> When it comes to handling [money](https://inleo.io/@leoglossary/leoglossary-money) or attaining [financial](https://inleo.io/@leoglossary/leoglossary-finance) freedom, being disciplined cannot be underrated or underestimated because it is a trait we all need if we must achieve a good result and attain freedom financially. Self-discipline is one of the important skills or traits an individual must master when it comes to handling money. What this means is that one should be able to resist the urge to spend money impulsively and have the willpower to stick to a [budget](https://inleo.io/@leoglossary/leoglossary-budget). Ways in which self-discipline can be developed and exercised are through setting goals, tracking one's progress and rewarding oneself for making good choices financially. In addition, we must understand the psychology behind spending and saving money and how our emotions can influence financial decisions. </div> --- <div class=text-justify> ## How do we develop self-discipline in handling our money? </div> --- <div class=text-justify> **Create a vision board:** This is a visual representation of one's goal. Creating a vision board helps in staying motivated and on track to achieving financial goals. Talking about money, a visual board includes the images of what we want to save for; be it a house, car, going on a vacation, learning a skill etc. This will serve as a reminder for us to stay on track till we achieve our goals. When an individual keeps seeing the visual board and has it in mind, he or she is likely to stick to a budget and reach goals faster. </div> <div class=text-justify> **Get an accountability partner:** Finding someone who would serve as a mentor and help us stay on track is something that would result in a positive outcome. It may be our friend, family member or even getting a financial advisor. It must be someone we trust enough and who supports our goals. Finding such a person requires sacrifice because he or she would be there all the time to help us stay focused, check in regularly and provide feedback. In this case, if we are struggling, our accountability partner will look into the areas that are causing the lapses, be it overspending or lack of managing money and would help proffer solutions. </div> --- --- <div class=text-justify> **Make savings a habit:** When you save today, you will have something to fall back on tomorrow without being stressed or having difficulties meeting some unexpected expenses. Savings is important in the journey of financial stability and it is expedient to make a habit of saving. In order to develop the habit of saving, starting small is the key. For example, one can start by saving as little as $10 weekly or monthly, when we feel comfortable with it, we can increase the amount and it continues like that. </div> <div class=text-justify> **Break your big goals into smaller ones:** Having a big goal can be hard to achieve at once except we break it down into smaller steps which we can manage. For example, if one's goal is to save $5000 in a year, such a person can break it down by saving $416 monthly and in this way, he or she would stay motivated and not feel overwhelmed. The idea here is to make our goals more achievable and less daunting. Also, we should remember to always celebrate our small wins as we keep staying focused and achieving a tangible result. </div> --- --- <div class=text-justify> **Find a suitable [budgeting](https://inleo.io/@leoglossary/leoglossary-budgeting) app or tools:** Just as I have been saying in my previous posts, budgeting is a good method of staying on track and being focused on handling our money. There are many apps on PlayStore and Applestore where one can download apps and begin their journey into financial stability. </div> <div class=text-justify> **Discover the psychology behind spending habits:** Understanding how we spend money in certain ways can help us change our habits and reach our financial goals on time. For example, some people spend money based on their emotions, as a way to cope with stress. When we understand this, it will help us find other healthier ways to cope with stress and find other ways to channel our happiness. In another sense, some individuals spend impulsively without thinking it through first but when we can realize this and recognise when we are prone to spending impulsively, it can help us avoid unnecessary [purchases](https://inleo.io/@leoglossary/purchase). </div> --- --- <div class=text-justify> In conclusion, financial freedom is not a destination but a journey that continues. It is all about finding a balance between saving money and enjoying one's money without anyone distracting the other. It is important to celebrate our progress and be patient because goals are not achieved overnight, it's a gradual process. What is important is to keep doing it and knowing we are taking a step each day and not staying in a spot till it is too late. </div> <div class=text-justify> ## <center>Thanks for your time on my blog.</center> </div> <center></center> Posted Using [InLeo Alpha](https://inleo.io/@princessbusayo/mastering-selfdiscipline-in-handling-our-money-)
