I'm certainly a fanatic when it comes to cryptocurrency, I see it clearly as a such a huge improvement to the way humankind operates today, that there's no other future than one, where blockchain is integrated to everyones daily lives. Today however, I'm talking of other such technology, Virtual Reality and specifically one application that's piqued my interest.
But I've thought Virtual Reality is just a passing fad like 3D television?
Well I don't blame you for believing so. So far Virtual Reality has been accessible for only the nerdiest of nerds. The high prices and demanding hardware requirements had made sure, that only the minority of population has gotten to see the future for themselves but that's quickly changing.
Affordable VR
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qD0cy6I6pfY Oculus just recently announced their Oculus Quest. It's a fully portable VR kit, that is a standalone and wireless. It's easy to setup, you literally just paint your playing area, making sure you don't break things during the most intense gaming sessions of your life. You can also have 5 different playing areas defined and in store. I've even heard of works to combine them all, meaning you could link all your rooms into one big playing area! Oh, one playing area can be about the size of half basketball court, so there's plenty of room to move around if you have space available. Also thing of the past is fuzzy text inside the VR, a lot of improvements have been made in optics and screen resolution over the years and it's slowly starting to pay off. Now you might be asking yourself, this is going to cost thousands for sure! But no, all this is yours for only 400$ so believe me, as Oculus is owned by Facebook and their betting on profiting through their market store instead of selling the hardware instead.
But you were here to introduce us NeosVR?!
Oh yes, I just wanted to let you know about where this space is heading. I assure you, the hardware is only going to get better and the immersion you get through VR is second to none! With screens you're looking through a small window to a world, with VR you're literally in that world as the character itself. There's just no contest between the two. But now back to the topic.
What is NeosVR
NeosVR lets you host your own digital world on your PC, this world starts empty but with other players you can start creating instantly, even together and in real time! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PQ4dC3GUCcY Here's an example of tools community members have created themselves. This is a good example of the power behind the NeosVR engine. The experience is like having a multiplayer Unity available to you within the game you're creating! I've seen people create flying drones that have camera and video feed, popular games from VRchat and some rather silly stuff! So how do you create something like a drone that you can fly yourself?
Let me explain
First you get a model for drone. You can create it yourself in Blender or download it for free from some site. Then you import it to NeosVR and but nothing happens. It doesn't move or fly at all. That's given since it's just a basic model with no functionality, you have to add that yourself! This is where logix, the programming language of NeosVR, comes to picture.
Logix is a visual scripting language
You might be familiar with nodes that are used in Unity, well Logix works the same but is developed by the NeosVR creator, Frooxius, himself. Below is an example of what Logix looks like in action. https://i.ytimg.com/vi/JJWVPPPUSus/maxresdefault.jpg So no Javascript or C++, just logix. But with that you can create elevetors, flying drones or hell, even Beat Saber inside NeosVR! And remember you can do all this with a bunch of friends, in the same space! So I welcome you to give Virtual Reality and NeosVR a try in its early days. Who knows, this might be the next Second Life, where you'll be selling your creations for thousands of bucks.
