Practice makes better
"Practice makes perfect" is a common say that we have heard. However, I only say "practice makes better" for my artwork. In many cultures such as Cham in Vietnam and Persian, nothing is perfect. In other words, they were scared of perfection because they believe that perfection is the starting point of way to ruin in the circle of life.

As an amateur painter, I often repaint professional artworks to practice, beside my own creativity. It is a good way to learn new techniques, new styles to wonder: "How come they could paint this?", "Which kind of brush they used for this object?". They are a common questions for those who have never been in art school like me.

This is my painting after the masterpiece by Marilyn Simandle. I am sure that my painting is not good like the original but it is a way to learn: "practice makes better"!

I often block stages of color first but I sometimes do the details a bit to inspire myself. It makes me see how it probably looks like at the end. I use acrylic so I can easily fix it by covered layers or add more highlight/ lowlight.

From the middle where I start, I give them more shades to see how it fits to the surrounding. Color mixing is always a challenge for me but I gain some experience from it. I used to use 'green plus black' to darken the leaves but I figure out that 'green plus orange' for dark leaves is much better. Surely adding more warm color will brighten not only the painting but also my mood.

In the next steps, I found that I did a wrong scale of canvas. Therefore it is longer than the original one. I needed to scale again the building and its stories are a bit taller.

After blocking stages and look the whole painting shade, I learn that the scale from sketch I did and how it looks in color are different. :D Individually, I find hard to have a right color of sunlight on the ground. I mix 'orange, yellow, white' but it is not the right. However, let it be!

Finally, the feeling to pull off mask-tape is fun and satisfying. I can't say it is perfect! But my try is worthy!
