Careers in science, technology, engineering, and math in the next decade are expected to increase compared to careers in other fields. The United States federal agency for science development, the National Science Foundation (NSF), says that 80 percent of jobs will require human resources with the competence of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM).

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics in 2011 revealed that globally over the next 10 years STEM jobs will increase by 17 percent, while employment in addition to STEM has increased by only 10 percent. Therefore, science-based education, technology, engineering, and mathematics are believed to be able to create a younger generation of successive nation that more competitive on a global scale.

Indonesia's young generation has good knowledge, skills and potential. However, can they compete globally? Based on data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) in 2010, shows that the workforce in Indonesia is still dominated by less skilled workers, which is as many as 88 million people. Only 22.1 million skilled workers and 6.5 million people are experts in their field.
