Some years ago I attended a narrative workshop with the renowned Venezuelan writer Rubi Guerra, where I learned theory and practice of literature, leaving me with a taste for the art of storytelling through the written word. One day, while I was walking through a used book sale, I saw a copy of *21 of XXI* which contains 21 stories selected by Guerra, who also wrote the prologue.

Of course I bought the book and I could see that it gathered a significant sample of outstanding Venezuelan writers of the 21st century, here Guerra analyzed works by 90 authors and proceeded to choose, according to his criteria, their most significant stories, taking into account the stories, the way they were presented and the language used.

The book takes us through interesting topics and positions itself from intimate perspectives. For the purposes of this review, I will analyze three stories that stand out for their narrative, aesthetic proposal and the way they involve the reader with the plots, creating sensations and even calling for reflection on the complex human dimension.

1. **Mrs. Hyde" by Sonia Chocron** 

Literature written by women has gone through several cycles of transformations, of course, influenced by reality and its nuances, in this case, the narrative voice is planted in a female character who undergoes a radical process of physical and mental change. Taking as a reference the classic novel *The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde*, Chocrón questions the norms to which women are usually subjected in a patriarchal society.

The protagonist of the story experiences an existential duality as she searches for meaning in her life. During the day she behaves normally, but when night falls she becomes a slut, as defined by the narrative voice, a woman with an unbridled sexual appetite who indulges in promiscuity without remorse. By placing good and evil, that is, love and carnal desire on a scale, she discovers that her condition is not unique.

2. **Sosima" by Jose Balza** 

In this story the handling of time stands out, in a few pages the author plays with the disposition of the actions in the middle of an extensive chronology. Sósima arrives at a house to be a servant and nanny, she is described as a woman with little grace, but with a good heart. The story intensifies as the years go by, the narrative turns to explore the complexity of maternal love yielding to passionate love.

Balza presents the cycle of life in a fleeting way. By means of well-defined discursive strategies, he uses Sosima as an excuse to precipitate reflection on what is really substantial in life and all the time that can be considered inconsequential when evaluated from old age.

3. **Homage to a star" by Elisa Lerner**.

This story is also worth analyzing because it presents the splitting of the protagonist from a very attractive point of view. She goes through menopause and undergoes various hormonal changes, imagines that she is her favorite actress, thus erasing her memories and installing in her mind the experiences of her idol. Reality and fantasy coexist to give meaning to a life that is approaching its twilight. 

The author approaches with sensitivity and humor the emotional crisis that comes when youth is left behind, that denial of identity that some people tend to show in the face of natural decadence. These pages take us through a complex path and show us the alternative of unfolding and projection as consolation.

As can be seen, the stories by Chocron, Balza and Lerner approach very human themes from unexpected angles. Each story is an invitation to enjoy, and this anthology is a must for lovers of good literature.

Por supuesto que adquirí el libro y pude constatar que reunía una muestra significativa de destacados escritores venezolanos del siglo XXI,  acá Guerra analizó obras de 90 autores y procedió a elegir, según su criterio, sus narraciones más significativas, tomando en cuenta las historias, la manera de presentarlas y el lenguaje utilizado.

El libro nos pasea por temas interesantes y se posiciona desde perspectivas íntimas. Para efectos de esta reseña analizaré tres cuentos que destacan por su narrativa, propuesta estética y la manera de involucrar al lector con las tramas, propiciando sensaciones e, inclusive, llamando a la reflexión sobre la compleja dimensión humana.


1. **"La Señora Hyde" de Sonia Chocrón**
  
La literatura escrita por mujeres ha pasado por varios ciclos de transformaciones, por supuesto, influenciada por la realidad y sus matices, en este caso, la voz narrativa se planta en un personaje femenino que experimenta un radical proceso de cambio tanto físico como mental. Tomando como referente la novela clásica *El extraño caso del Dr. Jekyll y Mr. Hyde*, Chocrón cuestiona las normas a las que suelen ser sometidas las mujeres en una sociedad patriarcal. 

La protagonista del relato experimenta una dualidad existencial en tanto busca sentido a su vida. De día se comporta con total normalidad, pero al caer la noche se convierte en una zorra, tal como la define la voz narrativa, una mujer con desenfrenado apetito sexual que se entrega a la promiscuidad sin remordimiento. Al colocar el bien y el mal, es decir al amor y al deseo carnal en una balanza, descubre que su condición no es única.

2. **"Sósima" de José Balza**  


En este relato se destaca el manejo del tiempo, en pocas páginas el autor juega con la disposición de las acciones en medio de una extensa cronología. Sósima llega a una casa para ser sirvienta y niñera, es descrita como una mujer poco agraciada, pero de buen corazón. La historia se intensifica cuando pasan los años, la narrativa se vuelca a explorar la complejidad del amor maternal cediendo ante el pasional.


Balza nos presenta el ciclo de la vida de forma fugaz. Mediante estrategias discursivas bien definidas, utiliza a Sósima como excusa para precipitar la reflexión acerca de lo realmente sustancial en la vida y de todo el tiempo que puede considerarse intrascendente cuando se evalúa desde la vejez.

3. **"Homenaje a una estrella" de Elisa Lerner**  


Este relato también es digno de analizar porque se presenta el desdoblamiento de la protagonista desde una óptica muy atractiva. Ella atraviesa por la menopausia y experimenta diversos cambios hormonales, imagina que es su actriz favorita, de esta forma borra sus recuerdos e instala en su mente las experiencias de su ídolo. Realidad y fantasía coexisten para dar sentido a una vida que se aproxima al ocaso. 


La autora aborda con sensibilidad y humor la crisis emocional que llega cuando la juventud ha quedado atrás, esa negación de la identidad que suelen mostrar algunas personas ante la natural decadencia. Estas páginas nos hacen transitar por un camino complejo y nos muestran la alternativa del desdoble y la proyección como consuelo.

Como se advierte, los cuentos de Chocrón, Balza y Lerner abordan temas muy humanos desde ángulos inesperados. Cada cuento es una invitación al disfrute, recomendable esta antología que se antoja imprescindible para los amantes de la buena literatura.
