**Inventory and other stories** is a book of short stories by Venezuelan writer Omar Mesones, which won the Salvador Garmendia narrative contest, awarded by La Casa Nacional de las Letras Andrés Bello, in 2007. In these pages we will walk through diverse and familiar themes such as frustration, uneasiness, hatred and revenge. To support his stories, Mesones displays a versatile imaginary, whose approach leads to everyday scenarios where very well constructed dialogues are presented.

I chose three stories to support my arguments, the first one honors the title **Inventory**, here we can place ourselves in the crisis of adulthood, time passes inevitably and bodies age. It is a reality to which we must all adapt to some extent. The character in this story is depressed, he has lost the direction and meaning of his existence. Hence, his life has become an inventory of defects and failures, he has only unpleasant thoughts about himself. The narrator leads us to reflect on the power of the mind, which can become the worst enemy if it works against us, so much so that the idea of suicide is also in the atmosphere. The reader remains immersed in the mind of the main character as a privileged witness of his process of introspection.



Youth is only an increasingly distant memory, the image he leaves behind and will not return, even his skills with words are gone, turning him into a gray being who has no attraction for women. The feelings of nostalgia and loss are palpable, so much so that it goes beyond the borders of the pages to make the reader shudder. Despite the fact that this story is some years old since its conception, it deals with a theme that does not lose its relevance due to the dynamics of humanity.

The second story is entitled **300 grams of low purity sex**. Here the narrative thread deals with drugs, prostitution, delinquency and death. This is one of those stories whose reading can lead us to references that can be found on a movie screen, since its structure and dialogues border on the action stories that the public likes so much. Characters, scenarios, objects and events are organized to unleash violence, which the author achieves with mastery.


The third story **Till Today** leads us to explore how complex human relationships can be, especially when greed and selfishness are entrenched in the soul. The central character, blinded by hatred, devises a plan to eliminate his boss, who is characterized as a greedy and ruthless person. In this case, the narrator makes us question the justification of actions since justice and freedom are achieved by morally inadequate methods.

I enjoyed reading Mesones because of his versatility, each story presents different elements from the others and therefore the reading is very pleasant. It is like zapping and stopping instantly to see how the scenes end and then continue. Undoubtedly, Mesones has a great ability to weave intimate stories, those that are able to bring the most demanding reader to let go of their prejudices and enjoy what is being presented.

Escogí tres cuentos para sostener mis argumentos, el primero de ellos hace honor al título **Inventario**, acá podemos situarnos en la crisis de la edad adulta, el tiempo transcurre de forma inevitable y envejecen los cuerpos. Es una realidad a la que todos en cierta medida debemos adaptarnos. El personaje de esta historia está deprimido, perdió el rumbo y el sentido de su existencia. De allí que su vida se ha convertido en un inventario de defectos y fracasos, solo tiene pensamientos desagradables sobre sí mismo. El narrador nos lleva a reflexionar sobre el poder de la mente, que puede convertirse en la peor enemiga si trabaja en nuestra contra, tanto es así que la idea del suicidio también está en el ambiente. El lector permanece inmerso en la mente del personaje principal como testigo privilegiado de su proceso de introspección.


La juventud es solo un recuerdo cada vez más distante, la imagen que deja atrás y que no volverá, hasta sus habilidades con la palabra se han ido, volviéndolo un ser gris que no tiene ningún atractivo para las mujeres. Las sensaciones de nostalgia y pérdida son palpables, tanto que pasa las fronteras de las páginas para lograr estremecer al lector. A pesar de que esta historia tiene algunos años desde su concepción, trata un tema que no pierde vigencia debido a la dinámica de la humanidad.

El segundo relato lleva por título **300 gramos de sexo de baja pureza**. Acá el hilo narrativo aborda el tema de la droga, la prostitución, la delincuencia y la muerte. Un relato de esos cuya lectura nos puede llevar a referentes localizables en una pantalla cinematográfica, dado que su estructura y diálogos bordean las historias de acción que tanto gusta al público. Personajes, escenarios, objetos y sucesos se organizan para desencadenar la violencia, lo que el autor logra con maestría.

El tercer cuento **Hasta hoy** nos lleva a explorar lo complejo que pueden resultar las relaciones humanas, sobre todo, cuando la codicia y el egoísmo están enquistados en el alma. El personaje central, cegado por el odio, concibe un plan para eliminar a su jefe, que se caracteriza por ser una persona avara y despiadada. En este caso, el narrador nos hace cuestionar la justificación de las acciones puesto que la justicia y la libertad se alcanzan por métodos inadecuados desde el punto de vista moral.

Me agradó leer a Mesones por su versatilidad, cada relato presenta elementos distintos a los demás y por ello la lectura se hace muy agradable. Es como estar haciendo zapping y detenerse al instante para ver cómo terminan las escenas para luego proseguir. Sin duda, Mesones posee gran capacidad para tejer historias íntimas, de esas que son capaces de aproximar al lector más exigente para que suelte sus prejuicios y disfrute de lo que se le está presentando.
