Dolphins Are Getting Stronger : A More Accurate Analysis

(1) Increase in dolphin numbers;

(2) Are dolphins important? Let's work it out in numbers!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In an earlier post by @timd entitled "Why Steemit Dolphins Will Become More Important Than Whales", I

asked him how he defined dolphins with respect to SP values and he said he hasn't bothered to work it out yet

and it would be good for someone to do it! I felt obliged to be that someone and get down to work and here it

is.

--------------(1)----------------

(1) Increase in dolphin numbers;

Have a look at the following table generated by Steem on July 27, 2016

All accounts (July 27, 2016)

http://i64.tinypic.com/2yngyop.jpg

Now look at similar table listed on June 18, 2016.

All accounts (June 18, 2016.)

http://i68.tinypic.com/73fgjb.jpg

12,676 accounts

total stake: 100.00%

To simplify calculation, I group dust and newbie under Minnows, user, superuser and hero under Dolphins while superhero (mod) and legend (supermod) under Whales. Their respective increments are calculated as below:

Grouping ---------18 June-------27 July-------Increment %

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Minnows---------9,497----------- 33,694---------254.8%

Dolphins --------3,001 ----------- 5,238----------74.5%

Whales------------178--------------213------------19.7%

__________________________________________________________________

Total-------------12,676-----------39,145---------200.8%

While minnows increase at the highest rate which is good, dolphins also increase rapidly, almost double in five

weeks, and at a faster rate of three and half times than Whales.

-----------------------------(2)------------------------

Are dolphins important? Let's work it out in numbers!

Now the July numbers give the following ratios approximately:

Whales 1: Dolphins 25: Minnows 149

Assuming Whales have a value of SMD 100, Dolphins a value of SMD 1 and Minnows a value of SMD 0.01

while 175 SMD is being distributed, you will get 1x100 + 25x1 + 0.01x149 = 126.49 SMD. Proportionately if

1000 SMD is in distribution, you can get 126.49 x 1000/175 = 722.80, This figure is lower than 901.99 worked

out by @timd. But I have to say it is not far from it and it will make me a happy man too.

However, you probably also notice that the major contribution still come from the Whales. if they are left out,

the figure will look like this: 0x100 + 25x1 + 0.01x149 = 26.49 SMD and for 1000 SMD, 26.49 x 1000/175 =

151.37 which looks more that what you are getting at the moment!

So fellow Steemians, I mean fellow Minnows and Dolphins, not only we have to keep swimming, we need to

swim harder!

Good luck, everyone!
