My Personal Take on "Rogue One" / "Rogue One" 评点
Yesterday, I had the pleasure of watching the eagerly awaiting “Rogue One”, the first of the new spin-off Star Wars movies. Seeing as the hype machine was so strong and how well it is doing at the box office, I thought I would give you my personal take on what I thought about it.

The plot continues on from the events after *Episode III – Revenge of the Sith* but before *Episode IV – A New Hope*. Now knowing the destructive capabilities of the original *Death Star* and what became of it, this movie provides the backstory by following a small band of rebels attempting to steal the actual schematic plans from the Empire itself. It fills in many gaps left from the original. How did they know about the small exhaust port to destroy the massive space station? How did that famous first opening scene of *A New Hope* come about in the first place? These as well as a host of other unanswered questions are put to rest in this film.

First things first, this is not your traditional *Star Wars* movie. Whereas all the other films have a very specific "operatic" feel to them, this one is way more rough around the edges. But in a good sort of way. Gritty and more “adult-orientated” in some ways than all the rest, it plays out more like a war epic than your normal formulaic adventure movie. The tension builds and builds until a very satisfying and cleverly thought-out conclusion is delivered at the end.

The main heroin is Jyn Erso. Her acting and general portrayal of a rebel wanting desperately to make a difference are top notch. She comes as a very welcome addition to the Star Wars universe and yet another great casting choice for a leading role from *Disney Studios*. Balancing a strong, tough persona as well as a vulnerable emotional side too, shows a hidden conflict within her. This translated very well onto the big screen.

Her supporting co-stars also kept in tow with the high quality of acting. One of my favourite new additions has to be the new robot, *K-2SO*. A hilarious and heart-warming android that cracks many funny one-liners and serves as a more than adequate replacement for the beloved *C-3PO*.

A strong mention must also go to Donnie Yen for his role as the blind *Chirrut Imwe*, a warrior who greatly believes in the spiritual powers of the force and his own destiny yet doesn’t outwardly possess any powers of his own. Real depth and unrelenting belief within a war that looks set to be a failure from the very outset. Great acting, a complex character and a good heart all in one.

The main villain is Orson Krennic. This guy is great in employing an understated performance. He did not display himself as the typical bad guy, such as speaking low and angrily and doing vile things just to show how evil he is. He just had a task to fulfil which was over see work on the *Death Star* and was following orders handed to him by his superiors. A role with no added frills on top. And the end result was absolutely fantastic. Great job indeed.

There are numerous *Easter Eggs* strewn throughout the movie for Star Wars movie buffs to sink their teeth into as well as one of the greatest movie scenes of *Darth Vader* I have ever witnessed. I’m sure that will be worth the price of admission alone!

The dogfights in *Rogue One* are simply the best to grace the franchise. Swooping cameras angles with beautifully choreographed space battles. I had to rub my eyes at some points in disbelief but yes, I was actually seeing what I thought I was. Some of the original cast members of the X-Wing fighter pilots from the *A New Hope* actually returned! How's just for franchise consistency!

One other well known character from the past makes a welcome comeback involving some seriously awesome CGI work. However I won’t give away who it is. But for all the fans out there, you will be floored when you see him! I guarantee it!

Overall, I felt it wasn’t quite up there with the absolute cream of the crop of movies in the *Star Wars* saga, but still way way above average. You’ll have a blast of a good time with it. And believe me, the minute you walk out of that cinema, you’ll want to put on *A New Hope* and give that a re-watch right away.

I’d give Rogue One an **8/10**.

Hope you enjoyed the review and everyone have a very merry Christmas! :)
