Can anyone explain why the amount of rewards for trending posts have been dramatically reduced during last days?

Really? Why? When I joined Steemit there were posts with 10-15-20 thousands of dollars as a reward. I'm not sure was it real or just my sweet dreams after my sweet pills but I saw a post with $40k reward (can anyone confirm this?).
But today's top 10 is much different. So, what happened?
