<p>I didn’t know that SIDS, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome has been tied to DPT shots. After writing several articles on the history of vaccines, I have learned I don't know anything about vaccines or the science behind it. That is what concerns me, we all get vaccinated right after we pop out of our mothers womb. However, we know nothing about the science  and we must be vaccinated to avoid infectious diseases.</p>

<p> Lea Thompson a Journalist produced a documentary made in 1982 called DPT: Vaccine Roulette. The documentary focuses on children with debilitating disabilities after they were given the DPT vaccine. This documentary has been blamed for informing parents of the dangers and increasing litigation against vaccine manufactures.  </p>

<p>Concerned groups of informed and educated parents in Britain and the United States have been reporting and speaking out about the negative side effects of DPT shots. Those who support vaccines and the manufactures have complained Lea Thompson used reports based on parent narratives rather than science reports. <p>

<p>DPT injury or DPT syndrome does not exist claims vaccine manufactures.</p>

<p>A group of parents along with Barbara Loe Fisher formed a group called, “Dissatisfied Parents Together,” established the National Vaccine Information Center. Parents who say their children developed ADHD, infantile spasms, SIDS, and autism. Autism had been rare until DPT vaccination program. While scientist argue autism was under-reported, because of the advances in medical diagnostic procedures has become easier to diagnose.</p>

<p>Fisher along with Harris Colter wrote, “A Shot In The Dark, documenting the connection between DPT and vaccine injury. Lea Thompson a professional journalist has a resume full of important stories throughout her long career. Many people who have criticized her and her work and don’t realize there has been a large group of studies about DPT vaccine injuries. Dr. David Miller and others in England during the 1970s started, “The National Childhood Encephalopathy Studies,” which assess the validity of parent reports regarding DPT syndrome. The NCEs had been gathering data on injury reports for years, with it’s first finding reported in 1981. This was a year before Thompson’s documentary was aired. In NCES first report it stated on rare occasions, DPT vaccine did result in brain injury. When I say brain injury I mean encephalopathy, which is a word that isn’t often mentioned when your child gets it’s round of DPT vaccines.</p>

<p>The NCES DPT injury report had some problems, there was no control group of unvaccinated children. It was at that time difficult to find unvaccinated children in the United Kingdom. In fact there has never been a study done between vaccinated and unvaccinated children. From what I’ve read regarding this kind of research the pro vaccine groups called this kind of study unethical because it is dangerous to leave children unvaccinated.</p>

<p>Encephalopathy or brain damage as a result of vaccines is the number one injury debated. The VICP injury table states: 1. A vaccine recipient shall be considered to have suffered an encephalopathy only if such recipient manifests, within the applicable period, an injury meeting the description below of an acute encephalopathy, and then a chronic encephalopathy persists in such a person for more than 6 months beyond the date of vaccination.</p>
<p>(i) An acute encephalopathy is one that is sufficiently severe as to require hospitalization even if hospitalization hasn’t occurred. </p>

<p>(A) For children less than 18 months of age who present without an associated seizure event, an acute seizure event, an acute encephalopathy is indicated by a significantly decreased level of consciousness lasting for at least 24 hours. Those children less than 18 months of age who present following a seizure shall be viewed as having an acute encephalopathy if their significantly decreased level of consciousness persists beyond 24 hours and cannot be attributed to a postictal state (seizure) or medication.</p>

<p>(B) For adults and children 18 months of age or older, an acute encephalopathy is one that persists for at least 24 hours and characterized by at least two of the following:</p>

<p>(1) A significant change in mental status that is not medication related; specifically a confusional state, or a delirium, or a psychosis;</p>

<p>(2) A significantly decreased level of consciousness, which is independent of a seizure and cannot be attributed to the effects of medication; and</p>

<p>(3) A seizure associated with loss of consciousness.</p>

<p>(C) Increased intracranial pressure may be a clinical feature of acute encephalopathy in any age group.

<p>(D) A “significantly decreased level of consciousness” is indicated by the presence of at least one of the following clinical signs for at least 24 hours or greater (see paragraphs (b)(2)(i)(A) and (b)(2)(i)(B) of this section for applicable timeframes):</p>

<p>(1) Decreased or absent response to environment (responds, if at all, only to loud voice or painful stimuli);</p>

<p>(2) Decreased or absent eye contact (does not fix gaze upon family members or other individuals); or</p>

<p>(3) Inconsistent or absent responses to external stimuli (does not recognize familiar people or things).</p>

<p>(E) The following clinical features alone, or in combination, do not demonstrate an acute encephalopathy or a significant change in either mental status or level of consciousness as described above: Sleepiness, irritability (fussiness), high-pitched and unusual screaming, persistent inconsolable crying, and bulging fontanelle.</p>


<p>It was decided that seizures in and of themselves were not sufficient evidence for the diagnosis of encephalopathy. In fact seizures were not viewed as the first symptom for acute encephalopathy. The NCES was the best research on this issue at that time. It supported, even though rare, DPT did cause brain damage. Which vaccine advocates vehemently deny vaccines have never caused brain damage. </p>
<p>After reading so many reports on parents complaints and also medical reports it is hard for me to understand why the debate has gone on for so long. Even if one child is harmed, which if you read court records thousands of children have suffered brain damage and even death. The legal term “unavoidably unsafe” is used to describe products like DPT in tort law. This is why the National Childhood Vaccine Act was established. </p>
<p>Because the vaccine manufactures were spending millions in court fighting vaccine injuries, difficulties finding insurance, and a small profit margins, by 1985 there was only one US manufacturer of DPT. Threats to congress from the pharmaceutical industry would close it’s vaccine production business there were plans to ration DPT by public health authorities. Concerned parents and manufactures pressured congress to do something about the vaccine crisis. </p> 

<p>President Ronald Regan signed the National Childhood Vaccine Injury Compensation Program under the United States Court of Claims to compensate vaccine injury victims. This bill gave it’s citizens a no fault administrative program under the United States Court of Claims to Compensate vaccine injury victims. </p>

<p>The vaccine manufactures would not be liable for any injuries incurred by vaccines. </p>

The intent of Congress was:
<div>1. To compensate for vaccine-induced injuries </div>
<div>2. To make vaccines safer</div>
<div>3. To insulate industry and medical professionals from liability for vaccine injuries.</div>

<p>One big question I have is if vaccines cause no injuries why do we have to have a vaccine court that eliminates liability for manufactures and medical professionals? Why has there been so many payouts and claims filed in the vaccine court if vaccines don’t cause injuries?</p>

<p>There is one fact that this act has accomplished, DPT vaccines were replaced with DTaP vaccine that was based on research from Japan. </p>

The DPT vaccine used a the whole cell of pertussis. The DTaP is an attenuated-cell version. There are many complaints against DTaP does not work and that DPT is safe. Those who suffer from DPT vaccine have a genetic variant, SCN1A and this is what triggers their seizures and developmental delays. Here the pro-vaccine movement actually admits that DPT causes injuries. The NVICP received this opinion to support case decisions.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK1318/">SCN1A genetic variant</a> was based on a small population sample and only a few out of this sample had the genetic variation. The study is important because it may explain why some children suffer seizures while the majority of children don’t. There hasn’t been a large population study on this theory and to this day no one knows how many people in the general population carry this genetic variant and whether all the SCN1A carriers suffer vaccine injuries or how many suffer from developmental delays.</p>

<p>There is an argument within the field of genetics that our genes do not determine our health, rather it is our environment that impacts our health. Scientific American published a study that advocated bringing back whole cell DPT even though there is a large body of work stating how dangerous it is for a small but still important group of people. If products causes injury to a small group of people the product is recalled but that does not seem to be the case with vaccines.</p>
