What does a person have to do to get upvoted on Steemit?

I have only been a steemer for about 2 months now and do not have a whole lot of time to research this social media platform. I work for a living as i assume most of you do. I currently have 50 followers (awesome people) but cannot get more than a few votes on any post. 

Is it because the post was not of high quality?  Are my followers not reading my posts? How do i get noticed by a whale?

I read today when researching on curation rewards that i should look at and upvote up to 20 articles per day (that are of content that interests me) so i am going to try that. Previously i only upvoted 1 to 2 articles a day that interested me.

Anyway, I am just a minnow trying to get by in an unfamiliar ocean. If you feel like this. Upvote me. My record is 12 and that was my introduction post.
